Abstract: A hard disk drive for receiving a removable cartridge having a recess formed in an exterior surface thereof, and an engaging surface of disk assembly mounting mechanism located in that recession. The drive possesses a handle 70 having a lever which extends into the recess to contact the engaging surface of the disk assembly mounting mechanism, whereby further movement of the handle causes the mounting mechanism to move in such a manner that a disk assembly within the removable cartridge is positioned over a spindle motor of the drive for mounting thereto. Other features such as position sensors and enhanced cartridge positioning mechanisms are also provided.
