    Abstract: 952,261. Gravity-separation apparatus. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION. May 8, 1962 [May 17, 1961], No. 17617/62. Heading BID. A liquid to be treated is supplied to a pump tube 16, an extracting solvent is supplied to a pump tube 18 and an inert gas (e.g. air) is supplied to a pump tube 17. The pump 12 is of the type where the tubes are resiliently flexible and are compressed along their lengths against a platen 22 by a series of pressure rollers 24 which are moved by sprocket chains 26 longitudinally of the tubes. The three components thus supplied to conduit 28 are mixed by passage through a series of spherical members 50 joined by narrower parts 52 and emerge at 54 into a separating vessel 14. An outlet 36 is connected to a pump tube 20 and an outlet 38 is connected to an adjustably-clamped tube 46. If the internal diameter of tube 20 is selected so that the flow rate of the separated heavier liquid through outlet 36 is less than the flow rate of heavier liquid entering at 30, and if tube 46 is clamped, the lighter liquid plus a little of the heavier liquid overflows at 42 and only the heavier liquid passes through tube 20. If it is desired to collect the lighter liquid, clamp 48 is dispensed with and tube 46 is connected to a further pump tube 54, Fig. 2 (not shown). The internal diameter of tube 20 is now selected so that the flow rate of heavier liquid through outlet 36 is greater than the flow rate of entering heavier liquid so that heavier plus a little lighter liquid flows out at 36 and only lighter liquid flows out at 38. In this latter embodiment the clamp 48 may be re instated and the diameter of tube 20 so choser that by opening the clamp the lighter liquic will be collected and by closing it the heavier liquid will be collected. Also in Fig. 2 the mixing device 50, 52 is dispensed with. Instead [a] the conduit 28 is coiled helically in the region between pump 12 and inlet 30, and the latter connects simply with the top of vessel 14.
