Abstract: 118,496. Stewart & Co., D., and Holmes, T. E. Oct. 11, 1917. Securing rolls on shafts.- In plate and like rolling- mills driven by toothed gearing only, to secure positive driving of the upper roll and yet prevent surfacemarking of the work owing to small differences in the speeds of the upper roll and the work and lower roll, a friction connexion is introduced between the upper roll and its driving universal shaft. The connexion consists of a cylindrical driving- member E, enclosing the coupling A of the universal shaft A , and embraced by a cylindrical driven member D fast on the spindle of the upper roll A. Screwadjusted springs G bear through radial plungers F on pads J surfaced with frictional material and bearing on the member E.

Abstract: 124,953. Stewart & Co., D., and Holmes, T. E. May 23, 1918. Hand, foot, and like gear; hunting-gear. - Steam-engines for rolling-mills &c. are controlled jointly by throttle-valves and reversing valve-gears under the control of single levers. With slight movements of the levers, the control is effected with throttled steam; with further movements of the levers, the throttle-valves are opened rapidly and the engines controlled by the valve-gears. The lever H is connected through floating-lever devices with two fluid relays G, C which are again connected up, through a floating-lever to the throttlevalve, and the further end of the lever is connected by links J, J', J , J with a reversing- engine comprising two differential rams M, M the smaller of which is in constant communication with an accumulator, and with its controlling- valves by a link L . The relay-cylinders G, C are connected to levers F, B. The lever B actuates a lever A pivoted on the engine frame, and the lever F a lever D pivoted on A and actuating the throttle valve E. The levers B, F are connected by links C , G each to one end of floating-levers C , G which actuate the controlling-valves of the relay motors, and are connected at their other ends to bell-cranks C', G actuated through links H and a bell-crank H by the hand-lever H. Cam, wedge, or other hunting-gear may be used instead of the lever mechanism described.

Abstract: 22,512. Davy Bros., and Holmes, T. E. Sept. 28. Lift valves. - In an hydraulic valve of the mitred - lift type comprising a main valve B opened by positive mechanical pressure transmitted to it through the medium of a pilot or balancing v a l v e H, means are provided for admitting water from the inlet passage E to the piston - space C behind the main valve only through the pilot valve chamber J. In the form shown, the water is admitted through a small duct c passing through the body of the main valve. A spring F holds the main valve closed until the pilot valve forces it upwards, and thus chattering is prevented d u r i n g opening and closing.

Abstract: 16,609. Davy Bros., and Holmes, T. E. July 19. Forging.-Relates to hydraulic forging-presses and the like worked by steam hydraulic intensifier apparatus of the kind referred to in Specifications Nos. 781, 18,329, and 23,628, A.D. 1905, [Abridgment Class Hydraulic machinery &c.]. A single hand-lever enables the press to be worked with long or short strokes without independent means for effecting the change. The steam supply and exhaust valves for the intensifier cylinder 9 are operated by the hand-lever 40 through a floating lever 53, substantially as described in Specification No. 18,329, A.D. 1905, and are further controlled by the hunting gear actuated by the moving piston-rod, as described in Specification No. 781, A.D. 1905. The valve 31 for the air vessel 29 is operated by link mechanism connected with the hand-lever or by the steam connectors, as described in Specification No. 23,628, A.D. 1905. The valve 21, Figs. 1 and 2, controls both the admission to and exhaust from the steam lifting-cylinders 5. The valve-rod 69 has a socket extension 68, with which the plunger 67 can be automatically locked. When the lever 40 is pulled to the right, the plunger 67 moves down until the latch 70, pressed by a spring 71, engages the slot 72 and locks the plunger to the socket 68. If the plunger is then moved up, the socket 68 and the valve 21 move with it until the bell-crank 73 makes contact with a stop 74 and withdraws the latch 70. The valve 21 then returns and rests on the seat 66.

Abstract: 327,531. Stewart & Co., Ltd., D., and Holmes, T. E. March 1, 1929. Actuating by liquid pressure; valve gear.- Apparatus for forcing viscous liquids comprises one or more rams 1, Fig. 1, each working in a hydraulic cylinder 4 and a cylinder 2 for the viscous liquid, the latter cylinder being provided with inlet and delivery valves 10, 11, the operation of which is controlled by the pressure valve of the hydraulic cylinder. The valves 10, 11 are connected to pistons 13', 18 in cylinders 14, 19, one side of the pistons being always under pressure admitted through pipes 16, 20 supplied from a pipe 25, which also supplies the cylinders 6 of rams 5 for effecting the return stroke of the ram 1. Hydraulic pumps are connected by pressure and return pipes 35, 41 to a valve block 29 fitted with a pressure valve 30, Fig. 3, exhaust valve 31, non-return valve 32, and a valve 33, and the pipe 41 is also connected to a storage tank. During the return stroke of the ram 1, the valve 10 is open so that viscous liquid may enter the cylinder 2, and a lever 74 is in the position shown, so that the exhaust valve 31 is open and the valve 30 closed to allow liquid from the cylinder 4 to pass through the pipe 38, non- return valve 32, and valve 31 to the pipe 41 . At the end of the return stroke, a tappet 105 acts through members 102 to remove a detent 97 from engagement with a member 92; a weight 89 then actuates the lever 74 to open the valve 30 and allow the exhaust valve 31 to close. Pressure liquid then passes from the pipe 35 through the valve 30 into a chamber 40, whence it passes through the pipe 23 to close the valve 10, and through a pipe 55 to close a valve 51 to prevent passage of liquid through a pipe 52 to the storage tank. When the pressure in the chamber 40 reaches a predetermined valve, it acts on a shoulder 106 to open the valve 33 and obtain access to the pipe 38 leading to the cylinder 4; finally the pressure acts through the pipe 23 to open the valve 11, and the forward stroke of the ram 1 is commenced, continuing until a cam 81 returns the lever 74 into position to allow the valve 30 to close to open the exhaust valve 31, and to move the member 92 into engaging position with the detent 97.

Abstract: 191,984. Stewart & Co., Ltd., D., and Holmes, T. E. March 7, 1922. Casting-machines; moulds.-Railway and like wheels are cast in a mould adapted to be collapsed to apply pressure to the casting. The upper and lower sections of a wheel mould are separated by a segmental ring C which forms the periphery of the wheel and is located against vertical faces on the main sections. Wedges E are removed after pouring and previous to the application of pressure. The core is centred by a plug J which may also serve as an ejector for the casting. A cooling coil K may be embedded in the lower mould section.
