Abstract: A modular energy storage device for a high voltage electrical power system is provided comprising at least two modules connected in series, each module including at least one dc power-source unit enclosed in a container and a positive and a negative terminal, and the device further comprising a positive and a negative pole, a first and a second conductor arranged to form a current path between the positive and negative poles, the first conductor including a plurality of conductor parts connected to the terminals of the modules to provide a series connection of the modules, a first module of the series connection of the modules being connected to one of the poles, and the second conductor is connected between a last module in the series connection of modules and the other pole, wherein the first and second conductors are arranged to pass through the containers in parallel such that a current flows through the first conductor in a first direction and through the second conductor in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

Abstract: The invention relates to a dc power source (3) for a high voltage power apparatus (1), the dc power source (3) comprising one or more strings (4a-c) including a plurality of dc power source units connected in series, and switches (7, 9, 11, 13) configured to connect and disconnect said strings (4a-c). The switches (7, 9, 11, 13) are solid-state switches distributed among the power source units of each string (4a-c), and all solid-state switches (7, 9, 11, 13) in the string (4a-c) are arranged so that they are turned on and off simultaneously. Each switch (7, 9, 11, 13) is connected in parallel with a first controllable semiconductor (16) in a first direction and connected in parallel with a second controllable semiconductor (20) in a second direction which is opposite to the first direction, and the dc power source (3) comprises a control unit (21) configured to bypass a failed switch (7, 9, 11, 13) by triggering the forward biased of the first (16) or second (20) controllable semiconductor connected to the failed switch (7, 9, 11, 13) in case a fault in the switch (7, 9, 11, 13) is detected

Abstract: The invention relates to a power apparatus (1) for a high voltage electrical power system (19), the power apparatus comprising a voltage source converter (2) and a high voltage dc power source (3) comprising one or more strings (4a, 4b, 4c) including a plurality of dc power source members (20a-e) connected in series, and switches (9), (11, 13) configured to connect and disconnect said strings, where said switches are solid-state switches, each string is subdivided into a plurality of dc power source units (8, 10, 12), each dc power source unit including a plurality of dc power source members connected in series and each dc power source unit is provided with one of said solid-state switches configured to connect and disconnect the dc power source unit, and that all solid-state switches in the string are arranged so that they are turned on and off simultaneously.
