Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to compensate image data for display on a curved display. A pixel uniformity compensation factor may be applied based on a pixel uniformity compensation factor map that is calibrated to the display panel while the display panel has a flat shape, and a panel curvature compensation factor may be applied when the image content is to be displayed while the display panel has a curved shape. The panel curvature compensation factor may be based on a panel curvature compensation factor map that is calibrated to the display panel after the display panel is bent from the flat shape to the curved shape.

Abstract: To enable a display to display different content to different viewers, a display may include a time-sequential directional backlight unit. The backlight unit may emit light in different directions in different configurations. In a first state, the backlight unit emits light at maximum brightness in a first direction. In a second state, the backlight unit emits light at maximum brightness in a second direction that is different than the first direction. The backlight unit may repeatedly and rapidly switch between the different states. The first direction may be towards a first viewer whereas the second direction may be towards a second, different viewer. Therefore, each viewer receives backlight in one of the configurations and does not receive backlight in the other configuration. In synchronization with the backlight unit, the liquid crystal display panel may repeatedly switch between displaying content for the first viewer and displaying content for the second viewer.

Abstract: A privacy film may have a light-blocking layer that is interposed between first and second transparent substrates. The light-blocking layer may have a plurality of opaque portions and a plurality of transparent portions. The opaque portions may be shaped to ensure light from the display is directed only to the primary viewer of the display. Each opaque portion of the light-blocking layer may extend along a respective longitudinal axis between the first and second transparent substrates. Privacy films used to cover curved displays may have opaque portions that extend along longitudinal axes that have different angles relative to the transparent substrates. Opaque portions in the edge of the privacy film may have longitudinal axes that are at non-perpendicular angles with respect to the transparent substrates. A privacy film for a curved display may also include a light-redirecting layer such as a prism layer or a liquid crystal layer.

Abstract: A lenticular display may be formed with convex curvature. The lenticular display may have a lenticular lens film with lenticular lenses that extend across the length of the display. The lenticular lenses may be configured to enable stereoscopic viewing of the display. To enable more curvature in the display while ensuring satisfactory stereoscopic display performance, the display may have stereoscopic zones and non-stereoscopic zones. A central stereoscopic zone may be interposed between first and second non-stereoscopic zones. The non-stereoscopic zones may have more curvature than the stereoscopic zone. To prevent crosstalk within the lenticular display, a louver film may be incorporated into the display. The louver film may have a plurality of transparent portions separated by opaque walls. The opaque walls may control the emission angle of light from the display, reducing crosstalk. The louver film may be interposed between the lenticular lens film and the display panel.

Abstract: An electronic device may include a stereoscopic display that is configured to display three-dimensional content for a viewer. The stereoscopic display may include a lenticular lens film with lenticular lenses that extend across the length of the display and may be referred to as a lenticular display. The lenticular display may have convex curvature. The lenticular display may include a color filter layer with color filters and an opaque masking layer. The color filter layer may be interposed between the lenticular lens film and an array of display pixels for the display. The color filter layer may mitigate ghost image artifacts and reflections of ambient light. Microlenses may be included between the lenticular lens film and the array of display pixels to improve the efficiency of the display. The display may include a Fresnel lens layer. The lenticular lens film may include lenticular lenses having different shapes.

Abstract: An electronic device may include a lenticular display. The lenticular display may have a lenticular lens film formed over an array of pixels. The lenticular lenses may be configured to enable stereoscopic viewing of the display such that a viewer perceives three-dimensional images. The display may render different content layers that present different classes of content. The different classes of content may have different characteristics. As an example, a first class of content may be static content whereas a second class of content may be dynamic content. The different characteristics of each class of content may be leveraged to use a hybrid approach for content processing. The hybrid content processing may take advantage of different layers needing to be updated at different frequencies and may take advantage of sparse content in some of the layers.

Abstract: An array of pixels in a display may be illuminated by a backlight having an array of light-emitting diodes in an array of respective cells. A reflector is used to reflect light from the light-emitting diodes through the array of pixels. Within the cells, the reflector has cross-sectional profiles that help distribute light emitted from the light-emitting diodes toward edges of the cells. A light diffuser layer for the backlight may have a partially reflective layer such as a thin-film interference filter with an angularly dependent transmission. Within each cell, the reflector may have cross-sectional profiles with portions that are parabolic or elliptical.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display such as a liquid crystal display. The display may have an array of pixels that display images to a user. Backlight structures may provide the array of pixels with backlight illumination at a backlight illumination level. The backlight structures may have a light source with an array of light-emitting diodes and photoluminescent material that is pumped by pump light from the light-emitting diodes. The backlight illumination may experience color variations as a function of the backlight illumination level. Circuitry in the electronic device may be used to implement a backlight level color compensator. The backlight level color compensator may apply color correction factors to the image data of the displayed images to compensate for variations in color of the image data due to variations in backlight illumination level and operating temperature.
