Abstract: Processing of a 4C cut from the fractionation of crude oil comprises: (A) extractive distillation; (B) selective hydrogenation by heterogeneous catalysis; and (C) distillation to obtain 1,3-butadiene whereby steps (A) and (B) are carried out in individual columns or thermally coupled columns and step (C) is carried out in a second column. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus to carry out the process comprising a separating wall column (TK) in which the separating wall lies in the longitudinal axis of the column to form a common upper column section (1), a common lower column section (6), inlet sections (2a, 2b, 4) and outlets sections (3a, 3b, 5a, 5b) whereby hydrogen (H) is added to the lower section (6); unreacted hydrogen is separated from the vapor stream of condensable light boiling components from (TK) in a condenser (K) with recycle via a compressor (V) to the lower section (6); with passage of the 1,3-butadiene containing stream (B) from the outlet sections (3a, 3b, 5a, 5b) of (TK) at a position beneath the inlet (F) for sections (2a, 2b, 4); and passage of the stream (B) for purification by distillation (step (C)).
