    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of discrete, non-agglomerated fibrids of an alefin polymer having at 25.degree.C and X-ray crystallinity of more than 5% w/w, said fibrids having a high degree of fibrillation and a high specific surface area, being not agglomerating on evaporation of solvent therefrom, having substantially no shrinkage when left in air, and capable of being freed from solvents and precipitants in the absence of surfactants and antifoaming agents and without solvent exchange. Said process comprises (a) dissolving 0.5 to 30% w/w of said olefin polymer in a solvent which is pentane or a solvent mixture containing at least sufficient pentane to cause the polyolefin to separate in the form of discrete fibrids, said mixture containing up to 98% pentane, under pressure at a temperature of 100 to 180.degree.C, (b) passing a stream of the resultant solution at a pressure thereof of 4 to 60 atmospheres gauge and at a temperature of 100 to 180.degree.C through an orifice into a chamber which is at atmospheric pressure and has a temperature of 50 to 80.degree.C, (c) passing a fluid coaxially with said stream into said chamber to produce a field of shear forces in said chamber, (d) flashing off in said chamber essentially all of said solvent from said stream and thereby solidifying said olefin polymer, and simultaneously forming in said field of shear forces discrete fibrids of said olefin polymer having lengths of 1 to 40 mm and thicknesses between 2 and 30 .mu.m, and (e) removing from said chamber a mass of said discrete, non-agglomerated fibrids. The fibrids directly obtained may be used, for exemple, for the manufacture of paper of for the manufacture of textile-like webs.

    Abstract: Concrete compositions are prepared from cement, water, an optional aggregate and particles of expanded styrene polymers whose surfaces are coated with an organosiloxanol of formula where n is an integer from 1-250, R is a C1-C6 alkyl or alkenyl group or an aryl group. The styrene may be copolymerized with acrylonitrile, acrylic or methacrylic esters of C1-C8 alcohols, N-vinyl compounds, e.g. N-vinyl carbazol and divinylbenzene. Aggregates specified are sand, pumice, vermiculite and asbestos.

    Abstract: Moulded articles of polyolefins are dyed or printed with water-insoluble dyes that are soluble in organic solvents from aqueous dispersion or organic solution with either simultaneous or prior treatment with a dispersion or solution of a silicon hydrocarbon compound, an alkysiloxane, arylsiloxane, alkylarylsiloxane, alkylpolysiloxane, arylpolysiloxane, alkylarylpolysiloxane or an ester or polyester of silicic acid which silicon compounds are soluble in hydrocarbons. In Example 6 moulded articles of polyethylene are dyed with an aqueous liquor containing polydimethylsiloxane, a dispersed anthraquinone dye and surfactants and in Example 7 the same articles are printed with a solution in methylene chloride of hexyl-azo-naphthalene, tetraethylsilicate, nickel - II - oleate, triethanolamine and a linear polymer from ethyltriethoxysilane (80%) and phenyltriethoxysilane (10%).ALSO:Polyolefin materials are dyed or printed with water-insoluble dyes, which are soluble in organic solvents, from aqueous dispersion or organic solution in a process wherein the material is pretreated with a dispersion or solution of a silicon hydrocarbon compound, an alkylsiloxane, arylsiloxane, alkylarylsiloxane, alkylpolysiloxane, arylpolysiloxane, alkylarylpolysiloxane or an ester or polyester of silicic acid which silicon compounds are soluble in hydrocarbons, or wherein the dyeing or printing is carried out with the co-employment of any of the said silicon compounds. The so-treated material may then be subjected to a heat treatment. The polysiloxanes may be formed in situ with the help of catalysts, e.g. acids, bases or metal salts. The preferred polysiloxanes cross-link when the dye is fixed, again preferably in the presence of metal salts. Examples are given.

    Abstract: Polymers of olefins which contain silicon atoms in the polymer chain are produced by polymerizing an olefin under an otherwise conventional high or low pressure process, in the presence of a compound containing one or more Si-Si linkages per molecule but not containing any unsaturated polymerizable group and optionally containing halogen or organic radicals. Examples of said Si-Si compounds are Si10Cl18, Si10Cl20H2 Si2H6, Si3H8, Si2Cl6, Si2Br6, [SiBr]x, [SiBr2]x, [SiH2]x, [Si(OC2H5)2]x, [Si(OCH3)2]x, [Si(CH3)2]6, [-Si(C2H5)Cl-]x, (CH3)3Si-Si(CH3)3, Si#jBr2-Si#jBr2, [-Si(CH3)2-]x, [-Si(C2H5)2-]x and Si(CH3)H2-Si(CH3)2H, wherein x is an integer greater than 2. Ethylene, propylene and butene are the specified olefins and in the examples the following catalysts are used: (1) TiCl3+ Et2AlCl in methyl trichlorsilane, (2) AlCl3 in cyclohexane, (3) AlBr3 in cyclohexane, (4) azodiisobutyronitrile in heptane, and (5) ethylaluminium sesquichloride in octane. The products may be oils, waxes or thermoplastic solids.
