Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the gel-phase or surface secondary cross-linking of water-absorbent polymers, characterized in that the polymer is treated with a solution for surface secondary cross-linking, during or after treatment undergoes secondary cross-linking by temperature elevation and is then dried. Dissolved in an inert solvent the cross-linking agent contains a compound of formula (I), where R and R independently of each other are H, hydroxy, phenyl or C1-C6-alkyl, R is hydrogen, C1-C12-alkyl, C1-C12-alkenyl or C6-C12-aryl and R and R independently of each other are C1-C12-alkyl, C1-C12-alkenyl, C6-C12-aryl, hydroxy, C1-C12-alkoxy or hydrogen. The invention also relates to water-absorbent polymers obtained according to the above method, and to their use in hygiene articles, packaging materials and non-woven materials.

Abstract: The present invention relates to polymerized hydrogel adhesives, in particular those wherein the hydrogel is formed from monomers which include acrylamido-2-methane propanesulfonic acid or salts thereof (AMPS monomers) and those which contain glycerol as a humectant. In such adhesives, the levels of unpolymerized residual monomers, such as unpolymerized AMPS, acrylonitrile, acrylamide and t-butyl acrylamide; and the levels of other impurities such as acrolein, are kept very low. The present invention also relates to a process for making hydogel adhesives with very low levels of such unwanted materials. Such a process involves preparation of reaction mixtures under selected pH and/or temperature conditions and polymerization of AMPS monomers using selected conditions of pH and UV curing.

Abstract: The invention contains a process for the surface postcrosslinking of water-absorbing polymers in which the polymers are treated with a surface postcrosslinking solution and during or after the treatment are postcrosslinked by means of an increase in temperature and are dried, wherein the crossiinker comprises a bis-2-oxazolidinone or a poly-2-oxazolidinone comprising structural units of the formulain which R1 is branched or unbranched C1-C18-alkylene, branched or unbranched C2-C18-alkenylene, C5-C18-cycloalkylene, phenylene, naphthylene, anthracenylene, hydrocarbon-substituted phenylene, naphthylene or anthracenylene or another substituted or unsubstituted C6-C18-arylene radical, R2 is branched or unbranched C1-C18-alkylene and n is an integer from 1 to 50 or a mixture of bis-2-oxazolidinones and poly-2-oxazolidinones dissolved in an inert solvent.
