Abstract: Oil soluble condensation products are prepared by interacting (a) 1 mole of a dialkyl benzene with (b) 1.5 mole to 6 mole of HCHO or an equivalent amount of a nitrogen-free formaldehyde generator at 70-180 DEG C., using an acid catalyst, neutralizing the product or washing out the acid and treating the product with (c) 10-40 times its weight of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide. The alkyl groups in (a) may contain up to 20 carbon atoms. (a) and (b) may be reacted in the presence of 1 mole of H2SO4 as catalyst. The second reaction may be under a pressure of 2-20 atmospheres in the presence of a caustic alkali as initiator and an inert solvent. Both reactions may be effected under an inert atmosphere and (a), (b) and/or (c) may be replaced by mixtures of reactants. In an example formalin and di-isopropylbenzene are interacted and the product dissolved in diisopropylbenzene. KOH is added as initiator followed successively by propylene oxide and ethylene oxide. The product is extracted from the solvent and dissolved in a mixture of di- and mono-methyl naphthalene.

Abstract: A mixture of succinic, glutaric and adipic acids, such as obtained by the oxidation of cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone or cyclohexane is separated by fractional distillation under subatmospheric pressure in the presence of steam. The mixture is introduced from tank 1 into evaporator 2, which is heated to about 200 DEG C. and is maintained at an absolute pressure of 40 to 100 mm. Hg. The mixture then flows down column 4 into a still 5 at 195 DEG to 220 DEG C. into which superheated steam is injected through line 7. The steam laden with acid vapours is conducted from the head of the column into the evaporator, the vapours then passing through line 8 into a condenser 9 and being sprayed therein with an aqueous solution from a receiver 10. Crystals of succinic acid suspended in an aqueous solution are obtained by cooling in a vessel 14, are separated out in a centrifuge 15. The mother liquid is evaporated and the residue is returned to the crude product. The product received in vessel 6 from the still is substantially glutaric and adipic acids. Water is added to convert anhydrides into acids before preheating in 17 and passing the mixture into a column 18. The still 19 of the column is heated to 200 DEG C., a vacuum of 40-50 mm. Hg is maintained at the top of the column, and superheated steam is passed through line 20 into the still. The vapours leaving the head of the column are cooled in a condenser 21 and liquid glutaric acid so formed flows into a receiver 22 while steam with a small amount of succinic acid flows into a condenser 23. A mixture of adipic acid with a small amount of glutaric acid is withdrawn at 27 from the still from which adipic acid may be recovered by crystallization. The columns are provided with packings, baffles, spirals or bubble trays.

Abstract: In a process for removing CO2 or H2S or both from gases which contain said constituents by washing the gases with an aqueous solution of a scrubbing liquid and subsequently regenerating the scrubbing liquid, the improvement which comprises: using a scrubbing liquid which contains up to 0.8 mole/l of piperazine as an absorption accelerator and at least one solvent of the group of chemical solvents in an amount of 1.5 to 4.5 moles/l, wherein that chemical solvent is selected from the group consisting of aminocarboxylic acids, potassium hydroxide and alkanolamines. The washing process is used for natural gases, coke-oven gases, gases from the gasification of coal and synthesis gases, of any origin.

Abstract: 1456732 Quaternary hexahydro-s-triazine derivatives BASF AG 3 April 1974 [4 April 1973 31 Jan 1974] 14751/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division D1] Novel salts have the Formula I in which the various radicals R 1 are, independently of one another, linear or branched alkyl of one to six carbon atoms or two radicals R 1 joined to the same nitrogen atom form together with it a heterocycle of four to seven carbon atoms; R 2 , R 3 and R 4 , independently of one another, are cyclic, linear or branched saturated or olefinically unsaturated alkyl of one to thirty carbon atoms which may be interrupted by one or more ether bridges, or unsubstituted, chlorosubstituted or alkyl-substituted phenyl or benzyl group of one to twelve carbon atoms in any alkyl substituents, and R 3 and R 4 may alternatively and independently be hydrogen or a free electron pair, R 5 is hydrogen or alkyl of one to four carbon atoms, Z is an unsubstituted or hydroxyl-substituted alkylene of two to six carbon atoms which may be interrupted by one or more ether or ester bridges, X (-) is an organic or inorganic anion which when there is more than one may be of different natures, and n is a number from 1 to 3. The salts of Formula I are prepared by quaternizing the corresponding compound of Formula II at 20-150‹ C., using the molar ratio of reactants corresponding to the desired product(s). In the examples compounds of Formula II in which R 1 is CH 3 , R 5 is H and Z is ethylene or trimethylene are quaternized using one or more of lauryl chloride, octadecyl chloride, dimethyl sulphate, cetyl chloride, ethyl bromide, octyl chloride, benzyl chloride, o-chlorobenzyl chloride, p-chlorobenzyl chloride, 3,4-dichlorobenzyl chloride and n-decyl-2-chloroethyl ether. Example 1 preparares 1,3,5-tris-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-hexahydrotriazine. The salts of Formula I are retarders for the basic dyeing of anionic polyacrylonitrile fibres.
