Abstract: A pressure-sensitive and heat-sensitive recording material which comprises a carrier bearing a color-developing coating consisting of (a) a finely divided solid phenolic resin with spherical particles of size where R1 is C8-C20-alkyl, phenyl or C1-C20-alkylphenyl, R2 is hydrogen or methyl, n is from 2 to 100 and m is from 0 to 50, and ( beta ) an ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid or phosphonic acid, with or without ( gamma ) an additional ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable compound different from ( alpha ) and ( beta ), and (c) one or more aliphatic alcohols which are solid at room temperature, with or without (d) other auxiliaries. The coating, used in conjunction with micro-encapsulated color formers, gives sharp and intense copies.

Abstract: Described is a process for preparing a dispersion of microcapsules by condensing a partially methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin having a molar ratio of melamine:formaldehyde:methanol of from 1:3.0:2.0 to 1:6.0:4.0 in water in which the essentially water-insoluble material forming the capsule core is present in dispersion in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a homopolymer or copolymer of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid as protective colloid at a pH of from 3 to 6.5 by preforming the microcapsules at a temperature of from 20 to 50° C. and then curing the capsule wall of the preformed microcapsules at >50 to 100° C., which comprises adding from 5 to 100% by weight of melamine, based on the melamine-formaldehyde resin, in the course of curing. The microcapsule dispersions are formaldehyde-reduced and of low viscosity.

Also claimed are inks containing the formulation, water and optionally water-miscible organic solvent and aqueous-alcoholic varnish colours or printing inks containing the formulation, water and 1-4 carbon alkanol(s).

Abstract: Photostable microcapsules, with a shell and core, have a core containing 10-90 wt.% dialkyl phthalate of formula (I), 9-89 wt.% high-boiling hydrocarbon (II), 1-10 wt.% triarylmethane leuco dye and 0-10 wt.% normal light stabiliser. In the formulae, R , R = 1-20 carbon (C) alkyl, optionally substituted by phenyl or 1-4 C alkyl-phenyl; R = R , hydrogen (H) or 1-4 C alkoxy. Also claimed is pressure-sensitive carbonless copying paper coated with these microcapsules. Preferably the core contains 4-90 wt.% (I), 9-59 wt.% (II) and 1-10 wt.% leuco dye; or 10-50 wt.% (I), 40-88.9 wt.% (II), 1-10 wt.% leuco dye and 0.1-8 wt.% light stabiliser.
