Abstract: : The present invention relates to l-hydroxy-methylimidazoles which are unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted in the 2-position and which correspond to the following general formula (I) : wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms. This invention is also directed to the manufacture of these new compounds as well as their use as chemical intermediates, e.g. for other imidazole derivatives or for the drug cimetidine.
