    Abstract: 1. A process for the preparation of anhydrous or substantially anhydrous formic acid by hydrolyzing methyl formate in the presence of a formamide and then obtaining the formic acid from the hydrolysis mixture by distillation, wherein the hydrolysis is carried out in the presence of 0.5-3 moles, per mole of methyl formate, of a water-soluble formamide of the formula I see diagramm : EP0161544,P5,F1 where R**1 and R**2 are each alkyl or together form an alkylene group, giving a 5-membered to 7-membered ring, with the proviso that the sum of the carbon atoms in R**1 and R**2 is 5 or 6 and that, in the case of an alkylene group, a carbon atom which is not directly bonded to the N atom can be replaced by an oxygen atom.

The invention comprises compounds of the formula A-NH-B, where A denotes the radical of a 1.amino.anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid and NH 2 -B denotes a monoamine or diamine of a dihydro or tetrahydro compound of a dimeric or trimeric cyclopentadiene an amine group of which is connected to a carbon atom of A. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula NH 2 -B with a halo-1-amino-anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid. A 4-halo derivative is preferably used.

[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises urea derivatives of the formula wherein R 1 represents CH 3 , OCH 3 or -CH(CH 3 ) C#CH; and the group R-NH- is derived from one of the amines: (a) exobicyclo-(3,3,0)- octylamine-2, (b) endo- and exobioyolo-(3,3,0)- octylamine-3 or (c) exobicyclo-(3,2,1)-octylamine-8. They may be obtained by subjecting bicyclo-(3,3,0)-octene-2 to the Ritter reaction, hydrolysing the acylamines to the corresponding amines, which are separated by preparative gas chromatography into four fractions of which the first fraction contains exo-bicyclo-(3,3,0)-octylamine-2, the second fraction endo- and exobicyclo - (3,3,0) - octylamine - 3, the third fraction endo - bicyclo - (3,3,0) - octylamine - 2 and the fourth fraction exo-bicyclo-(3,2,1)-octylamine-8; and reacting either the individual amine fractions or the amine mixture with the appropriate carbamic acid derivatives dissolved in a hydrocarbon and in the presence of an acidbinding agent or a catalyst to give each of the above ureas and 1-(endo-2-bicyclo-[3,3,0]-octyl)- 3,3-dimethylurea, or a mixture of these ureas respectively. They are useful as active ingredients in herbicidal compositions (see Division A5).
