    Abstract: In the catalytic dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons (esp. ethylbenzene into styrene), a mixt. of hydrocarbon and steam is heated at least to the reaction temp. in a preheater (zone A), passed through a zone (B) filled with catalyst and heated indirectly, then passed through a nest of catalyst-filled tubes (zone C) surrounding the central tube of a tubular reactor and heated indirectly, and then passed through a zone (D) filled with catalyst and heated indirectly from outside, while the heat-transfer medium (HTM) used for heating first heats zone (D), then gives up heat to another portion of the HTM flow in countercurrent to it before being passed into the nest of tubes in co- or cross-current to the reactants and giving up heat to the rest of catalyst-filled tubes, then passes through the central tube of the tubular reactor, heats zone (B), and finally preheats the reactants in zone (A).
