Abstract: In the recovery of heat from organic reaction products in heat exchangers with production of steam the reaction product, after cooling to near the condensation temperature if desired, is compressed to raise the condensation temperature. In the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene at about one atmosphere the reaction effluent first heats incoming ethylbenzene-steam reaction mixture and is then cooled in a heat exchanger to about 125 DEG C. with production of steam at about 1,5 atmospheres pressure. The reaction effluent is then compressed to about 1,5 atmospheres and condensed with further production of steam. In the dehydration of ethyl alcohol to ethylene the reaction effluent first heats the ethyl alcohol feed and is then compressed to about 1,5 atmospheres and steam and ethyl alcohol vapours are condensed with production of steam.

Abstract: A process for the recovery of high boiling point water-soluble organic substances from the waste gases from multi-stage steam jet vacuum apparatus consists in so selecting the condensation of the first jet stage that by indirect cooling down to about 0 DEG C. the propellant steam is almost completely condensed with a part of the organic substance, and the organic substance is washed out with the condensate of the first stage before the gas proceeds to the next jet stage. In an example, a gas containing caprolactam and originating from the condenser of a distillation plant enters a steam jet through a pipe where steam at 4.6 excess atmospheres is used. After cooling to 2 DEG C. there is obtained 11.95 kgs. per hour of a condensate containing 1.66 kgs. of caprolactam. This solution may be dehydrated together with the bulk of the distilled lactam coming from the distillation plant. By the intermediate cold water condensation the steam consumption in the second steam jet stage is diminished from 50 kgs. per hour at 3.5 excess atmospheres to 33 kgs. per hour at 4.5 atmospheres, and the amount of cooling water in the following injection condenser reduced from 6.8 cu. metres per hour to 3.5 cu. metres at a water temperature of 25 DEG C.
