    Abstract: The novel pyridone dyes are of formula (I) (where n = 0, 1 or 2; B is a gp. of formula X-NH-Z or COO-(A-O)m X1;R1 is 1-3C alkyl; Y is Cl or Br; X is CO or SO2; X1 is C6H5, C6H5 CH2, C6H5-CH2-CH2, C6H5-O-CH2-CH2, ClC6H4 CH3-C6H4, Cl2C6H3, (CH3)2C6H3, Cl-C6H4-O-CH2-CHi or Cl2C6H3-O-CH2-CH2; Z is aralkyl interrupted by one or more O atoms; A is CH2-CH2 or CH(CH3)CH2; m = 1 or 2; R is H, 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkyl substd. by OH or by 1-4C alkoxy, or cyclohexyl methylcyclohexyl, norbornyl, phenylethyl, phenoxyethyl or phenoxypropyl; R is H when B is CO-NH-Z). As greenish-yellow dyes for polyesters and also for acrylonitrile polymers and cellulose esters, having excellent fastness to light moisture and heat-fixing. Intensity of colour, uniformity and other tinctorial props. are also very good.

    Abstract: New azarhodamine lactones have formula (I) (R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl. R2 is 1-4C alkyl or Ph opt. substd. by 1-3C alkyl and/or Cl. R3 is 1-20C alkyl, 3-12C alkoxyalkyl or 7-12C phenalkyl. R4 is H, CN, Cl or Br and R5 is H, 1-4 C alkyl or Ph opt. substd. by 1-3C alkyl, MeO-, EtO-, Cl or Br). Use of (I) as colour-formers for press.-sensitive recording materials, e.g. copying paper, is claimed. (I) are colourless cpds. In contact with acidic materials (I) form strongly coloured salts. Shade is orange to red. (I) can form black mixts., when combined with green or greenish-blue colour-formers. In an example, (I where R1 = R2 = Et, R3 = Bu, R4 = CN, R5 = Me) was prepd. by condensing 2-(4'-diethylamino-2'-hydroxybenzoyl)-benzoic acid and N-butyl-6-hydroxy-3-cyano-4-methyl pyridone-2 in presence of Ac2O.

    Abstract: Thermoplastics are coloured with dyes of formula (I): where A' is a gp. A or a gp. (II) D is the residue of a diazo component, R is H, alkyl or (methyl)phenyl, X is H, carbamoyl or CN, Z is a (cyclo) alkylene, aralkylene or arylene gp., where the alkylene gp. may be interrupted by O, S or N-substd. imino, and A is H, (substd.) (cyclo)alkyl, aralkyl, phenyl or acyl or may together form a 5-7 membered heterocyclic ring with N. (I) are used for dyeing thermoplastics in bulk at is not >300 degrees C, e.g polystyrene, hard PVC, polyethylene, polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, styrene-butadiene copolymers and ABS copolymers. (I) are stable to heat. They have up to 3.5 x the colour strength of dyes normally used for dyeing in bulk.
