Abstract: A method for keeping the screens in paper machines clean and free from unwanted deposits during paper prodn. comprises spraying the returning wire screen with water to which has been added high-mol. wt. cationic polyelectrolyte (I). Pref. (I) has charge density at least 4.0 m-equiv./g (at pH 4.5). Pref. (I) is polyethyleneimine, ethyleneimine-grafted polyamido-amine which is crosslinked with epichlorohydrin or with reaction prods. of at least 2 moles epichlorohydrin and 1 mole polyalkylene oxide, polyether-amine, polyamido-amine and/or a polymer contg. vinylamine units pref. with mol. wt. at least 50,000. ADVANTAGE - The method makes it possible, without using solvents or detergents, to keep the wire free from deposits such as Ca, Mg, and Al salts of resin acids, high polymers, carbonates, silicate, abraded metal, pigments, resins, grease, waxes, bitumen, starch, dyes, fibre particles and insol. components of synthetic additives and finishing aids.
