Abstract: The cracking of gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons to form synthesis gas or olefines is effected in a reactor in which the particulate solid heat carrier and/or catalyst descends as a compact charge in a substantially vertical direction through a chamber which is cylindrical in its upper part and conical in its lower part and which comprises in the lower part a conical tray tapering downwardly and having annular openings through which the solid passes, the upper diameter of the tray being less than the internal diameter of said upper part. Gasification agents, e.g. steam, carbon dioxide, or an oxygen-containing gas, may be reacted with the hydrocarbons.
