Abstract: A process for the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from alkyl-substituted monohydric phenols by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst complex of a copper salt and an organic amine, subsequent stopping of the reaction and removal of the metal component of the catalyst by addition of chelating and/or salt-forming agents, wherein the polymer solution is treated with a compound having the general structure: where R2 and R3 can be identical or different and each is OH, NH2, NHR5, where R5 is alkyl or cycloalkyl, or SH, and where R1 and R4 are identical or different, being hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, carbonyl, carboxyl, carboxyalkyl or nitrile, and can be linked to form a ring, advantageously in an amount of from 0.1 to 100 mmoles and advantageously in from 1 to 20% strength aqueous solutions.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of thermoplastic copolymers by continuous polymerisation of a mixture of a) a vinylaromatic monomer and b) a monomer from the group consisting of nitriles and esters of (meth)acrylic acid and of maleic anhydride, in bulk or in solution in the presence of small amounts of water, it being possible for an elastomer having a glass transition temperature of below 0 DEG C which may already be dissolved in the mixture or the components of the mixture to be present, in at least one mixed (stirred) reactor under steady-state conditions with dissipation of the heat of reaction by evaporative cooling, and subsequent discharge of the reaction products from the reactor and conventional isolation of the copolymers and recovery of the unreacted monomers, alone or together with a solvent, if one was used, and recycling thereof into the reactor together with the mixture of a) and b), where the polymerisation is carried out with the proviso that from 1 to 25% by weight of steam, based on the gases present in the vapour space of the reactor, are present in the vapour space and the reactor discharge contains less than 0.1% by weight of water.

Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic moulding composition containing a polycarbonate A and a mixture B of two different copolymers BI and BII, of which BI is present in a proportion of 5 to 95 % by weight, based on B, and is built up from bI1) from 99 to 50 % by weight, based on BI of styrene and/or a ring-alkylated styrene derivative, bI2) from 1 to 50 % of maleic anhydride and BII makes up a proportion of from 95 to 5 % by weight, based on B. The copolymer BII is built up from bII1) from 99 to 50 % by weight, based on BII of styrene and/or a ring-alkylated styrene derivative, bII2) from 1 to 50 % by weight, based on BII, of acrylonitrile, and the proportions by weight of the monomers building up the copolymers BI and BII are in the range 1.38 >/= (bII2/bI2) >/= 0.72. The moulding composition may contain, based on 100 parts B, from 1 to 50 parts of a graft copolymer C and furthermore conventional additives, and is used for the production of mouldings.

Abstract: A continuous process for the polymerisation of olefinically unsaturated monomers in bulk or in solution in which at least a portion of the low-viscosity materials to be fed to the polymerization zone is thoroughly mixed with a portion of the high-viscosity contents of the polymerization zone in a mixing zone disposed upstream of the polymerization zone, which mixture is then continuously fed to the polymerization zone. The resulting polymers have a uniform composition and a narrow molecular weight distribution. They may be converted to shaped articles by thermoplastic methods.

Abstract: Copolymers of acrylonitrile and preponderant amounts of vinylidene chloride are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in aqueous emulsion in the presence of 0.5 to 10% by weight, based on the total monomer, of dimethyl formamide. A minor proportion of one or more other monomers, e.g. vinyl sulphonic acid, acrylic acid or maleic anhydride, may also be present, and polymerization may be effected in the presence of hydrogen peroxide or potassium persulphate, or mixtures thereof with formaldehyde sulphoxylate, sodium bisulphite or ascorbic acid; and emulsifiers, e.g. alkali metal salts of sulphonic and fatty acids. In an example, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid are copolymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of potassium persulphate, ethylhexyl thioglycollate, sodium bisulphite and dimethyl formamide to give a copolymer readily soluble in toluene/methyl ethyl ketone mixtures.
