    Abstract: 1287036 Shearing polyethylene BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 30 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 4548/70 Heading C3P Molten high pressure polyethylene is subjected to shearing in a shearing unit at a temperature of 200‹ to 300‹ C. and a viscosity of 5 Î 10 3 to 1 Î 10 5 poises in the absence of atmospheric oxygen, wherein the shearing surfaces contacting the polyethylene melt are at a temperature at least equal to that of the polyethylene melt entering the shearing unit and shearing is effected with such speed that the product of shearing speed and residence time is 5 x 10 2 to 5 x 10 4 . The unit may be a screw extruder. The polymer may contain 0À01 to 0À5 weight per cent of residual ethylene which may react with radicals formed in the shearing zone. The products may be made into films.

    Abstract: Organosilicon binders are prepared by mixing organosilanols or condensation products or reaction products thereof containing either hydroxyl or alkoxy groups with either an organometallic silanolate or organometallic siloxanate containing Ca, Al, Fe or Mg; the examples relate to organometallic compounds of Ca. The binder may also contain a filler. This may react with the system, e.g. cement or may be a passive filler. The latter may, e.g. be metal oxides, glass, asbestos, ceramic materials, cellulosic materials. Other polymers, e.g. condensation polymers: polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, phenoplasts or aminoplasts or addition polymers of: olefins, styrene, vinyl chloride, acrylic acids and esters may be used.

    Abstract: 1,098,496. Extrusion granulating machines. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. April 28, 1965 [April 29, 1964], No. 17810/65. Heading B5A. An extrusion granulating machine, particularly intended for granulating thermoplastics, comprises a screw 1 whose flight 3 is provided with a hollow ground cutting edge 3a, the screw combining the functions of cutting the extrudate 4 and conveying the granulate towards outlet 8, the latter function being assisted by liquid coolant which enters by inlet 2a and is carried by the screw into contact with the die face from a trough 2b. Additionally a gaseous coolant may be used. Die head 5 is provided with band heaters 6 and a ceramic plate 7 thermally insulates the head 5 from chamber 2. Screw 1 may have one or more flights 3, be tapered, and in any case is arranged to be easily replaceable. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), several rows of extrusion orifices are provided and in the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not reproduced), several screws with or without a common drive are used. The flights of these screws may overlap one another.

    Abstract: In moulding processes where polyolefines such as polyethylene or polypropylene having a molecular weight of more than 120,000 are plasticized mainly by the effect of frictional heat, e.g. in extrusion and injection moulding, the polyolefine is supplied to the moulding machine in the form of sintered granules together with 0.05-5.0% by weight of a lubricant. The lubricant, which is said to increase the throughput of material without degradation or melt fracture thereof, is an organic or inorganic substance which crystallizes into a layer lattice structure and may be the salt of a monovalent to tetravalent metal with a saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. sodium, zinc or cobalt stearate, or, as examples of an inorganic substance, graphite, graphitic acids, molybdenum disulphide, magnesium silicate or boron nitride. The starting material may be obtained by conventionally mixing the sintered granules and lubricant or by applying an atomized solution of the lubricant to the granules.
