Abstract: Polymers of monoolefins are made by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising chromium oxide or a "Ziegler-type" catalyst, and optionally hydrogen, at temperatures below the softening point of the polymers formed, in a fluidized bed formed from the catalysts, and the polymers formed at a flow velocity of the monoolefin in the fluidized bed of up to about 15 cm./sec., wherein the ratio of the diameter to the height of the fluidized layer is between 1:1 and 1:8 and the fluidized bed is stirred by moving the particles of polymer formed and particles of catalyst in the direction of the monoolefin by means of a stirrer having a shaft on which blades are provided in spaced relation and which rotate at 20 to 250 r.p.m. The Specification also includes an apparatus for effecting the above process which comprises a container having a cylindrical portion and an upper portion which tapers outwardly, and a shaft rotatable in the cylindrical portion which has mounted thereon a plurality of spaced blades obliquely arranged so that an upward movement is imparted to material in the container. The blades are preferably provided at their outer ends with portions in the shape of ring segments and the blades are arranged on axes which are perpendicular to the stirrer shaft and uniformly twisted with respect to each other. The Specification contains a long list of catalysts which may be used. Exemplified catalysts are chromium oxides supported on SiO2 or aluminium silicate; triisobutyaluminium and TiCl3; triethylaluminium, TiCl3, and di-n-butylformamide or diethylene glycol diethyl ether; triethylaluminium, TiCl3, and triphenylphosphine oxide; a complex of 3TiCl3.AlCl3, diethylaluminium chloride and triphenylbutylphosphonium chloride, a mixture of methylaluminium sesquichloride, carbon black, and vanadium oxychloride, and a mixture of diethylaluminium chloride and 3TiCl3.AlCl3. Exemplified monomers are ethylene, propylene, a mixture of ethylene and butene-1, a mixture of ethylene and propylene, and 4-methylpentene-1.

Abstract: Poly-(a -mono-olefines) are separated from solutions containing 1 to 20% by weight of the polyolefine dissolved therein by evaporating solvent from the solution at temperatures between 30 DEG and 240 DEG C. and pressures between 1.1 and 40 atmospheres until the solution contains 50 to 80% of polyolefine, then reducing the pressure to between 760 and 10 mm. of mercury, with or without increase in temperature, and removing the solvent thereby vaporized. Preferably, if the initial solution contains 1 to 15% of poly-(a -mono-olefine), the solvent is evaporated in two or more evaporators up to a poly-(a -mono-olefine) content of 50 to 80% by weight. In the first evaporator the solvent is preferably evaporated at temperatures of 10 DEG to 20 DEG C. above the solubility temperature of the poly-(a -mono-olefine) in the solvent used, and the boiling temperature in the second evaporator is preferably higher. The solvents used are linear or branched aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons having boiling points at standard pressure of 35 DEG to 220 DEG C. such as pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, gasoline fractions, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene and xylene. A flow diagram is provided.

Abstract: Ethylene is polymerized in tubular reactors at 1,000-4,000 Atm and 150-300 DEG C. with feeding of cold ethylene at several successive points in the reactor and using up to 10-1% oxygen as catalyst which is added preferably in solution, to the cold ethylene in such amount that the oxygen concentration in the united gas stream at the points of confluence in the reactor is at least 0.5 x 10-3%, preferably 10-3-10-2%, and the speed of the reaction mixture in the reactor is at least 2.5 m/sec., e.g. up to 10 m/sec. The main ethylene stream may first be heated to e.g. 170-200 DEG C. The cold ethylene stream may be at 10-100 DEG C. and the oxygen concentration may be higher in the second cold ethylene stream than in the first. The oxygen may be dissolved in water, alcohols, e.g. methanol, or hydrocarbons e.g. benzene. The polyethylene may be used to form articles or tubular film.
