    Abstract: Composite fibers (I) are prepared by heating a mixture of a PTFE or PTFE-copolymer-dispersion or powder with a fine particulate inorganic material and a fiber forming material with stirring such that the PTFE or PTFE copolymer becomes capable of flow but does not decompose and the dispersing agent is removed (in the case of a dispersion) and shearing the mixture in a mixer having a Froude number of more than 1. An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of a diaphragm by addition of (I) to a solution containing water and a thickening agent; filtering of the mixture with suction over a porous support to layer the composite fiber (I); drying of the coated porous support and heating at 90-390 degrees C.

NaCl in a concn. up to the satn. pt., pref. up to 250 g/l. Pref. soln. (I) also contains 500-5000 ppm Cu and/or Fe cpds., esp. Cu(II) and/or Fe(III) salts. The mixt. contains 0.005-5 (pref. 0.05-0.5) wt% (II). Component (II) contains alkynol(s), esp. an alkyne-diol, pref. mixed with 1-25 wt% amine, esp. hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA), ethylhexylamine or diethylhexylamine, and/or 0.1-3 wt% surfactant, esp. a quat. ammonium salt.
