Abstract: In a process for the continuous production of crosslinked, finely-divided gel polymers by co polymerisation of water-soluble mono-unsaturated monomers and poly-unsaturated comonomers in a multi-screw mixer-kneader, at least 5% of the heat of reaction is removed by evaporation of water, at least 25% with the product and the rest by cooling the reactor. A process for the continuous production of crosslinked, finely-divided gel polymers (I) involves the co polymerisation of (a) water-soluble mono-unsaturated monomers, (b) 0.001-5 mol% (based on a) monomers with at least two ethylenic double bonds and (c) 0-20 mol% water-insoluble mono-unsaturated monomers in 20-80 wt% aqueous solution in presence of initiators at 0-140 deg C, by feeding the monomer solution with the initiator and inert gas into a mixer-kneader with at least two parallel rotating shafts fitted with several kneading and transporting elements to move the materials through the mixer. In this process, at least 5% of the heat of reaction is removed by evaporation of water from the reaction mixture, at least 25% is removed with the product and the rest is removed by cooling the reactor walls.

Abstract: The invention relates to a cross-linked, water-swellable polymer that contains polymerized into it moieties of a) water-soluble, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, and b) 0.001 to 5 mole % based on the monomers a) of a cross-linking combination, b1) a first cross-linking agent with at least two (meth)acrylic ester moieties in the molecule and b2) a second cross-linking agent with at least two (meth)allyloxy moieties in the molecule, the molar ratio of b1) to b2) ranging from 0.7:1 to 10:1. The polymer according to the invention has a balanced property profile as regards absorptivity, gel strength, absorption speed and extractable componenents and can be advantageously produced by a continuous method.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing low-odor, hydrogel-forming polymers based on acrylic acid. Said method comprises the following steps: a ) a polymeric hydrogel is produced by radically polymerizing a monomer composition containing at least 50 percent by weight of acrylic acid in an aqueous polymerizing medium, and the hydrogel is transformed into a particle - shaped hydrogel or a powder forming a hydrogel; and optionally b) the partic le- shaped hydrogel or the powder forming a hydrogel is treated with a crosslinking substance comprising at least two functional groups that are reactive towards the carboxyl groups of the polymer, optionally in a latent form. The inventive method is characterized by the fact that the acrylic aci d used in step a) comprises a total amount of oligomers of less than 500 ppm, preferably no more than 400 ppm, and especially no more than 300 ppm, ppm referring to proportions by weight relative to the acrylic acid. Advantageously, the proportion of triacrylic acid (compound I in which x = 2 ) and higher oligomers of the acrylic acid amounts to less than 100 ppm, especially less than 50 ppm, and particularly less than 10 ppm.
