    Abstract: A joint between a submarine optical fibre cable (7) and a repeater housing (3) is divided into two parts coupled by a section of flexible pressure resistant hose (1). The hose (1) is attached at one end to the repeater housing (3) and at the other end to a modified cable to cable joint (6). The cable (7) terminates at the modified cable to cable joint (6) and optical signals and electrical power are transmitted from the cable (7) to the repeater apparatus inside the repeater housing (1) by means of optical fibre tails and insulated electrical conductors which extend from the modified cable to cable joint, along the hose (1), through a feed through arrangement at the repeater housing bulkhead (2) and as far as the repeater apparatus.

    Abstract: Communications are established between a source user (305) and a destination user (307). Data is transmitted between these users in packets (204) having a destination address (205) and communication data (206). A destination name is identified in a first packet and this packet is transmitted to a service control platform (301) identifying, in its communication data, a destination name. A packet is then returned from the control platform (301) to the originating source (305) identifying a real contactable address for the identified destination (307). Subsequent packets of data are generated at the source (305) for transmission to the destination (307) wherein the transmitted packets have the actual destination address, as returned from the service platform, appended thereto.

    Abstract: An index set for a database is specified by analysing a sample (718) of SQL statements applied to the database (701). Indexes (707) are identified that could assist in the execution of the analysed statements and levels of improved operation are evaluated for each of said indexes. The evaluated levels are then processed (708) to specify an index set for inclusion on the database. The database may not include sufficient storage (702) for all of the specified indexes to be included, therefore the available storage space is allocated and indexes are selected on a prioritized basis.

    Abstract: A method of modulating an optical signal includes passing the signal through a liquid crystal modulator thereby modulating the polarisation state. The liquid crystal modulator comprises a plurality of individually switchable liquid crystal cells. These cells are arranged in series between an input and an output of the modulator. The modulator is set in different configurations corresponding to different combinations of settings of the individual liquid crystal cells. It applies one of a multiplicity of discrete polarisation modulation states to the input signal depending upon the configuration chosen. The liquid crystal material may be a ferro-electric material and the modulator may comprise two or three such liquid crystal cells configured, e.g. as half-wave cells or quarter-wave cells. The modulator may be used to modulate a single-photon signal in a method of key distribution using quantum cryptography.

    Abstract: A semiconductor travelling wave optical amplifier is presented in a new configuration. An amplifier chip (20) has the rear facet (23) provided with a reflective coating. Optical signals are input and amplified signals are output via optical fibres (21, 25, 30) and directional coupler (24). A single fibre-to-amplifier alignment is required between fibre tail (25) and the front facet (22). The front facet (22) is provided with a very low reflectivity coating. In this configuration the amplification is increased in comparison with the conventional in-line amplifier configuration.
