    Abstract: A telephone answering system has a plurality of agent-station (103) and a switch (102) for directing incoming calls to said agent-stations. A storage device (401) stores signals indicative of previous incoming calls, from which levels of incoming calls are forecasted for times within an operational period. The forecasted levels are translated into active agent-station requirements with reference to the stored data. This translating process consists ofidentifying a range of call forecasts, translating a plurality ofthese forecasts within the range to produce a plurality of potential requirements and processing the plurality of potential requirements to produce a translated requirement.

    Abstract: In an optical network through which data is transmitted as a stream of bits during successive bit periods by an optical source with a given centre frequency, to a receiver for detecting a frequency baseband, interferometric noise power, in particular incoherent beat noise power, is minimised by causing a variation in the centre frequency of the source such as to cause a redistribution of the incoherent beat noise power from the baseband to higher frequencies, thereby reducing the noise in the baseband.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for locking the frequencies of a number of first beams of coherent radiation from respective sources (17). Typically, the sources (17) will form local oscillators in respective transmitters (1). The apparatus comprises a reference beam generator (10) such as a HeNe laser which generates a primary reference beam fed to an interferometer (12) which generates a second, reference beam composed of a number of reference frequencies. This second reference beam is caused to interfere with each of the beams from the local sources (17) in an optical coupler (16) and the resultant beam is detected with a photodiode (22). The electrical output signal of the photodiode (22) is filtered and fed to a discriminator (25) which controls the frequency of the local laser (17). The discriminator (25) controls the laser (17) to maintain the relationship between the frequencies of the laser (17) and the reference laser (10) substantially constant.

    Abstract: A Distributed Object System includes an Event Collection Mechanism (14) which receives information on the creation, deletion and actuation of objects within the system. The Event Collection Mechanism passes on the collected events to an Event Dispatch Mechanism (16) with which user applications may register. The Event Dispatch Mechanism forwards details of events to the User Applications, according to the criteria selected by the user. A method is provided for linking all reported events back to the object which was ultimately responsible for their creation.

    Abstract: A tool (F) is provided for installing an optical fibre transmission line (1) between the inside of a customer's premises and the outside thereof along a preinstalled tubular pathway which passes through an aperture in a wall of said premises.
