Abstract: A method of inhibiting the formation of slime in an industrial aqueous system, such as an industrial cooling water system, a water-based paint or pulp and paper system. The system being susceptible to the formation of slime comprising the step of contacting the industrial aqueous system with an N-dodecyl heterocyclic compound having the general formula as described, wherein the heterocyclic ring defined by N-R is a substituted or unsubstituted group selected from pyrrolidinyl, 2-pyrrolidinonyl, pyrrollinyl, pyrazolidinyl, pyrazolinyl, pyrazolyl, imidizolidinyl, imizolinyl, imidazolyl, oxazolinyl, piperadinyl, piperazinyl, morpholinyl, hexamethyleneimine and heptamethyleneimine in an effective amount to inhibit the formation of slime.
