Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes an image bearing member (1) with a recirculatively movable peripheral surface; and means for forming electrostatic latent images (3) on the peripheral surface of the image bearing member (1), the means comprising a charging member (2) to which voltage is applicable to charge the image bearing member (1), the charging member (2) comprising a flexible member (2b) capable of forming a nip (n) between itself and the image bearing member (1); means for developing (4) the latent image with the use of developer (4d) composed of toner particles (t) and electrically conductive particles (m), the developing means (4) being capable of cleaning the residual toner particles (t) from the image bearing member (1), and the electrically conductive particles (m) transferred onto the image bearing member (1) by the developing means (4) being delivered to the nip (n) by the image bearing member (1); wherein the flexible member (2b) is moved so that it maintains a peripheral velocity difference relative to the image bearing member (1).

Abstract: A device for charging or discharging a member is arranged opposite to a member 2 to be charged or discharged, and comprises an inducing electrode 4 and a discharging electrode 5 sandwiching a dielectric member 3 so that the discharging electrode faces the member to be charged, and an alternating voltage is applied between the inducting electrode 4 and the discharging electrode 5 to produce a surface discharge on a surface of the dielectric member 3 at the discharage electrode side, wherein the charge density of the surface discharge area varies in the direction of the width of the discharging electrode; by moving the member 2 to be charged or discharged relative to the discharging electrode, it can be subjected first to a low charge density portion an then to a high charge density portion. The variation of charge density can be achieved by positioning the discharging electrode 5 nearer to one edge of the inducing electrode 4, on providing several discharging electrodes at varying spacings.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus wherein a laser beam produced by a laser source is imaged through an imaging optical system on an image bearing member as a beam spot. The beam spot scans the image bearing member in a main scan direction. The laser source is rendered on and off to form an image with picture elements. The laser driving pulse width per picture element is changed in accordance with the image density of the image to be formed, so that the tone gradation of the image is provided on the image bearing member in accordance with the pulse width. The size of the spot measured in the main scan direction (1/e2 diameter) is not more than 0.7 times of the size of the picture element measured in the main scan direction.
