Abstract: An image signal processing apparatus has an optical system including an image sensor, a comparator for comparing the density level of a current line with that of a previous line as a predicted value, a CPU for determining a threshold level in a different mode in accordance with the result obtained by the comparator, and another comparator for comparing the current image signal with the threshold value from the CPU to produce a binary encoded signal. The apparatus properly discriminates background and information portions of an original image and performs binary encoding of image signals in real time without requiring a large-capacity memory.

Abstract: In an electronic flash unit which is provided with a first flash discharge tube for indirect illumination and a second flash discharge tube for direct illumination, the emission of the flash from the first flash discharge tube and the emission of the flash from the second flash discharge tube are started separately and terminated simultaneously, in order to simplify a complicated circuit arrangement which would otherwise be necessary in order to keep a fixed ratio between the light quantity reflected from an object when the first discharge tube emits a flash and the light quantity reflected when the second discharge tube emits a flash. Despite the simplified circuit layout, the second discharge tube is switched to a perfect flash emission.
