    Abstract: The process comprises a step (X) of spinning a solution at least one constituent component of a gel to solidify said solution into a fiber and a step (Y) of changing said component into a gel. A preferred component is a cross-linkable polymer e.g. vinyl monomers, polyimines, polyesters and polyamides, preferably N-substituted acrylamides. A cross-linking agent is preferably included with the component. The products have the property of reversibly swelling and shrinking by external action.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of electrode reaction by coating a conductor with a determined polymer by means of a gel composed of a cross-linked high molecule which gel deposits a determined oxidation/reduction reaction material with a satisfactory adhesion, and using the resulting conductor as an electrode. CONSTITUTION:The surface of any one conductor of platinum, zinc and copper is coated with a mixture of a polymer such as polyacrylamide and an electrolyte such as ammonium persulfate, so that it is laid in a gel state composed of a cross-linked high molecule, for example, under nitrogen atmosphere. The coated conductor is oxidized or reduced as a positive electrode, negative electrode or catalyst to deposit a product thereon. The deposit is an organic material such as polyaniline or an inorganic material such as zinc. The electrolyte remains in the gel. The gel is tightly and uniformly adhered to the conductor surface, in which a number of oxidation/reduction products are deposited. Thus, the use of said conductor as an electrode enables an improvement in the electrode efficiency.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To make the shape of a surface variable and to change refractive power without forming a mechanical constitution on the outside of a lens by providing the title element with a means for applying energy to high molecular gel of a high molecular gel layer formed on the inside of an elastic layer having an optical face. CONSTITUTION:The high molecular gel layer 3 to be used also as an actuator of a lens element and a solvent layer 4 consisting of liquid adsorbed or discharged to/from the gel layer 3 are formed. The gel layer 3 can absorb or discharge solvent by voltage and consists of a lens part constituting material with high transparency. An interface between the gel layer 3 and an electrode 5 is joined with a conductive bonding agent and a holder 6 of the lens element keeps mechanical strength as the lens element at the time of changing the volume of the gel layer 3 and holds the outer peripheral parts of elastic layers 1, 2. Consequently, it is unnecessary to arrange a specific driving device on the outside and the change of curvature in the shape of the surface can be increased by the impression of small energy.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a switch which is operated with a simple structure and can cope with the various external environment by providing a movable contact moved interlockingly with the expansion or shrinkage of gel and a fixed contact. CONSTITUTION:When external stimulation is applied to gel 1, the gel 1 absorbs the surrounding liquid 2 or discharges the liquid contained by it and expanded or shrunk by its continuous or discontinuous volume change. When external stimulation is applied to the gel 1, for example, the gel 1 absorbs the surrounding liquid and expanded, a partition plate 3 is moved interlockingly with the volume change of the gel and pushed up, a contact 4 is brought into contact with a fixed contact 5, the electrical conductivity is obtained, and switching is allowed if an electric circuit is connected. A detection section of the environment change and an operation section performing the switching are integrally constituted, and this switch can cope with various external environment changes with a simple mechanism.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily form surfaces different from optical factor and to perform optical control by providing an optical modulating part having plural unit layers including gel which is reversibly swollen or contracted by an external action and allowing a pair of unit layers to include gel different from additional condition of external action. CONSTITUTION:Unit layers 2-1, 2-2...2-n (3-1, 3-2...3-n) of a liquid layer 2 (3) containing gel are arranged on a substrate 1 of an optical modulating element through a resistance heating layer 4 and a resistance heating protective layer 5 between them, and a transparent protective plate 10 is arranged on them. An electrode 8 is provided correspondingly to this liquid layer part 6 and an outer frame 7, and a voltage is applied to the electrode 8 by a power source 20. Unit layers 2-1, 2-2...2-n are used as the optical modulating part containing gel which is reversibly swollen or contracted by an external action, and a pair of layers contain gel different from external condition for swelling and contraction. Pigments are included in gel, and the temperature of gel is changed by the external action to modulate it to the transparent state or the opaque state.
