Abstract: PURPOSE:To use a shallow water tank and reduce a space above the water tank by a method wherein monomolecular films on the water surface are caused to adhere to the outer peripheral surface of a lower rotating drum so as to be picked up and then transferred onto the surface of a base plate via an upper rotating drum. CONSTITUTION:When liq. substances are dropped onto the water surface between a transfer barrier 13 in a water tank 11 and a lower rotating drum 14 therein and the lower rotating drum 14 and an upper rotating drum 15 are made to rotate, monomolecular films A are forced toward the lower rotating drum 14 by a transfer barrier 13 and adhered successively to the outer periphery thereof so as to be picked up and then transferred onto the outer periphery of the upper rotating drum 15. As a base plate is being carried on the upper rotating drum 15 synchronously with the rotation thereof, the monomolecular films A are transferred onto the underside of the base plate 10. In this way a shallow water tank 11 can be used. Also a small space above the water tank 11 suffices for this purpose.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an in-plane switching mode liquid crystal display element which performs display with a lateral electric field and attains sufficiently high resolution and an aperture ratio by controlling light transmissivity over a region corresponding to a space between segment electrodes and common electrodes and a region corresponding to the electrodes. By applying the lateral electric field E, the orientation direction of the long molecular axes 20a of the liquid crystal molecules 20 is made to change into a direction which crosses the direction of the electric field.

SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel is provided with a common voltage generation circuit, a drain voltage (data signal) generation circuit, a gate voltage (scan signal) generation circuit and a control circuit, and the control circuit controls the respective circuits so as to become a common signal Vcom, a drain signal Dn (case of black display) and gate signals gate gate 1 - gate 220. When such a liquid crystal display device is driven at 60 Hz, the scan time of the gate signals gate 1-gate 220 for every field becomes 13.93 m sec, and an excess period T=2.74 m sec of a second half of every field is the period not contributing to a display. A reset voltage is supplied to respective drain lines 4 in the period T.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element which is hardly affected by the parasitic capacitance of a TFT and has a wide angle of visibility. SOLUTION: A pixel electrode 22 is formed on a TFT substrate 11, a lower layer electrode 31 and an additional capacitance electrode 38 are formed on a counter substrate 12, a color filter 33, etc., are formed thereon and upper layer electrodes 35a, 35b are formed on a color filter 33, etc. The upper electrode 35a is connected to the lower electrode 31. Liquid crystal 13 is enclosed between the TUFT substrate 11 and the counter substrate 12 to constitute the liquid crystal display element. The driving voltage applied between the lower layer electrode 31 and the pixel electrode 22 is applied to the liquid crystal 13 as it is in a region where the upper layer electrode 35a is arranged, and is lowered by a color filter 33 and applied to the liquid crystal 13 in a region where the upper layer 35b is arranged. Further, the additional capacitance is individually connected to the liquid crystal capacitance in both regions. Consequently, the lowering of voltage of the pixel electrode 22 due to the parasitic capacitance of the TFT 21 is reduced.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display element whose visual field angle is uniform and wide. CONSTITUTION: On the counter substrate 12 side of a liquid crystal display element, a lower layer electrode 31 and an upper layer electrode 35 arranged on it are formed as an electrode to be confronted with a pixel electrode 22. In each pixel, an area where a driving voltage is impressed as it is by the upper layer electrode 35 and an area where a lowered by a color filter 33 is impressed from the lower layer electrode 31 are formed and the visual field angle of the pixel is widened. Since permittivity lowering agent is incorporated into color filters 33G, 33B of respective R, B colors, voltages lowered in respective filters are larger than the voltage lowered in the color filter 33R. Consequently, the difference between voltage to be impressed on liquid crystal of two areas in an R pixel becomes larger than the difference between voltage to be impressed on liquid crystal of two areas in G, B pixels and visual field angle improving effects are made almost equal in respective R, G, B colors and visual field angles for every pixel become uniform and wide.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To change the luminance of the light emitting surface of a backlight unit or the display surface of a display device without changing the luminance of a light source. CONSTITUTION:This backlight unit 12 is provided with a polymer dispersion type liquid crystal panel 16 on the upper surface of a light emitting device 15. The panel 16 is constituted by sealing substance including liquid crystal 27 in polymer 26 between two transparent substrates 21 and 22 having transference electrodes 23 and 24 on their opposed surfaces. Therefore, by changing voltage impressed between the electrodes 23 and 24, the scattering intensity of light is changed, and a light transmitted state is changed. As a result, not only the luminance of the light emitting surface of the unit 12 but also that of the display surface of the display device are changed without changing the luminance of the light source 19.
