Abstract: A liquid crystal display device comprises a TFT substrate where TFTs are formed, an opposing substrate (CF substrate), a liquid crystal with a negative dielectric anisotropy filled between both substrates, a pixel electrode, and an auxiliary electrode formed around the pixel electrode. The pixel electrode has a recess portion formed by etching a gate insulation film. Abstract: A liquid crystal display device has an opposing substrate on which an opposing electrode is formed, a TFT substrate on which pixel electrodes arranged in matrix, thin film transistors connected to the pixel electrodes respectively, and gate lines and data lines for the thin film transistors are formed, vertical alignment films formed on the opposing inner surfaces of these substrates, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the vertical alignment films and having negative dielectric anisotropy. Each pixel electrode has a slit formed for separating each pixel into a plurality of sub-pixels by partially eliminating the pixel electrode with a connecting portion left at which adjoining electrode portions of each pixel electrode is connected with each other. The width W1 of the pixel electrode that runs in a direction in which the slit is formed and width W2 of the connecting portion have a ratio W2/W1 of 0.13 or lower.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a liquid crystal display element which provides a highly defined display without the disclination of liquid crystal molecules with a high yield. SOLUTION: The method is for manufacturing the liquid crystal display element by cementing a pair of substrates while oppositely placing the space of alignment layers and enclosing liquid crystal between the pair of substrates. After enclosing the liquid crystal between the pair of substrates, the substrates are heated to a temperature at which the liquid crystal has a isotropic phase. Then, the whole liquid crystal layer is cooled uniformly and at high speed by blowing cold air or soaking them in cold water. Thereby, various kinds of domain disclination states unstable in energy can be realigned to a normal alignment, and the liquid crystal display element which provides a uniform and highly defined display without a so-called domain alignment defect can be produced with a high yield.

SOLUTION: In the device, segment electrodes 3 and common electrodes 4 are formed corresponding to a plurality of pixel regions A on the inner face of one substrate 2 in such a manner that at least two of the electrodes 3 and at least one of the other electrode 4 are alternately arranged along at least one direction of the pixel region A. Thus, the distance between the electrodes 3, 4 is decreased so that an electric field with sufficient intensity can be obtained even when driving voltage applied between the electrodes 3, 4 is low and that the aligned direction of liquid crystal molecules near the substrate 2 where the segment electrodes 3 and common electrodes 4 are formed can be changed.

It is desirable that the lacked part 18a of the counter electrode 18 is formed to be a wide width wider than at least the width of the area between the signal line 11 of the upstream side of the orientation processing in signal lines 11 of both sides of the pixel electrode 3 and the edge part of the pixel electrode 3. When the laked part 18a of the counter electrode 18 is formed to be the wide width in such a way, the oblique electric field is prevented from being generated more effectively.

A common voltage is applied to the common electrode and a d.c. voltage which is offset approximately one to two volts in a positive or a negative direction with respect to the common voltage, is applied to the electrode 31. Then, longitudinal electric field corresponding to the difference between the voltages is generated between the electrode 31 and the common electrode and ionic impurities in a liquid crystal 4 are suctionally fixed to the electrode 31.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a wide viewing angle without changing the structure of a liquid crystal display device by displaying an image with synthesized viewing angle characteristics of the display having the viewing angle characteristics at a first driving voltage and the display with viewing angle characteristics at a second voltage. SOLUTION: By alternately switching a first driving voltage V1 and a second driving voltage V2 for every field, the display changes between the alignment state to give the transmittance according to the image data and the alignment state to give different viewing angle characteristics from the viewing angle characteristics by the first driving voltage V1. Therefore, the image can be displayed with synthesized viewing angle characteristics of the display having the viewing angle characteristics by the first driving voltage V1 and the display having the viewing angle characteristics by the second voltage. By this method for driving, the apparent viewing angle of the liquid crystal display device is increased by the synthesis of the viewing angle at the first driving voltage V1 applied and the viewing angle at the second driving voltage V2 applied.
