A polystyrene based composition is provided having high impact strength and gloss. The gloss is particularly noted when the resin is molded into plastic articles, especially at relatively cooler temperatures, such as 80 DEG F to 100 DEG F. The composition contains three resins. The first resin comprises polystyrene and rubber particles smaller than 1.0 micron, such as 0.2 to 0.6 microns. The second resin comprises polystyrene and rubber particles larger than 1.0 micron. The third resin preferably is a block copolymer of styrene and butadiene. Unexpectedly, the third resin improves the gloss achieved by the overall composition.
Abstract:
An oxygen scavenging ribbon comprises a heat sealable resin and an oxygen scavenging material. This ribbon, upon oxidation of the oxygen scavenging material, does not release significant amounts of byproducts which are odorous and/or non-GRAS food additives. This ribbon can be in a number of forms including a multilayer casting or blown film tube. This ribbon provides a great deal of flexibility in the scavenging of oxygen within packaging environments.

A fuel additive composition comprising: (a) a fuel-soluble aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted amine having at least one basic nitrogen atom wherein the hydrocarbyl group has a number average molecular weight of about 700 to 3,000; (b) a polyolefin polymer of a C2 to C6 monoolefin, wherein the polymer has a number average molecular weight of about 350 to 3,000; and (c) a hydrocarbyl-terminated poly(oxyalkylene) monool having an average molecular weight of about 500 to about 5,000, wherein the oxyalkylene group is a C2 to C5 oxyalkylene group and the hydrocarbyl group is a C1 to C30 hydrocarbyl group.

Polyalkyl hydroxy and amino aromatic carbamates having formula (I) or a fuel-soluble salt thereof; wherein X is hydroxy or amino; R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, lower alkoxy having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, nitro, amino, N-alkylamino wherein the alkyl group contains 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or N,N-dialkylamino wherein each alkyl group independently contains 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and R4 is a polyalkyl group having an average molecular weight in the range of about 400 to 5,000. The polyalkyl hydroxy and amino aromatic carbamates of formula (I) are useful as fuel additives for the prevention and control of engine deposits.

A composition suitable for processing comprises at least one ethylene copolymer derived from alpha -olefins having 2 to 8 carbon atoms and alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids or derivatives thereof, and a rheology improving amount of at least one compound having a polar functionality. Examples of suitable rheology improving compounds include low molecular weight acids and their derivatives, polyhydroxy compounds, and a low molecular weight acid containing polymers. In one particular embodiment, the present invention relates to ionomers of the ethylene polymer and in particular, ionomers derived from ethylene alkyl acrylate copolymers. Moreover, specific examples for suitable rheology modifying compounds includes lactic acid and ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers.

Disclosed is a process for esterifying and/or transesterifying a polymer having a polyethylenic backbone and pendant acid and/or ester moieties comprising contacting a melt of the polymer with a transesterifying compound so that the polymer undergoes esterification and/or transesterification but not alcoholysis. The esterified or transesterified polymer also has pendant ester moieties which differ in kind and/or number from the unreacted polymer. In one embodiment, the process also comprises adding an amount of a transition metal salt that is effective to promote oxygen scavenging. Also in a further embodiment, the process comprises irridiating the transesterified polymer with actinic radiation to reduce the induction period before oxygen scavenging commences. Also disclosed are compositions comprising a component which comprises an ethylenic or polyethylenic backbone and a pendant or terminal moiety comprising a benzylic, allylic, or ether-containing radical. The invention also embodies new polyethylenic oxygen scavenging compositions comprising a transition-metal salt and the above component. Methods of making the compositions, and methods and compositions using the ethylenic or polyethylenic compositions, are disclosed.
