    Abstract: An apparatus for exchanging pouring tubes at a casting vessel having a closeable bottom pour opening of a continuous casting installation. Each pouring tube has an infeed end and an outfeed end for the molten metal, typically steel, flowing therethrough and into a throughflow vessel, such as a continuous casting mold or tundish. Guides serve to move each pouring tube from an approximately horizontal introduction or infeed position into a substantially vertical casting position. The guides are structured such that different paths of movement are provided for the infeed end and outfeed end of the pouring tube, and specifically, the infeed end of the pouring tube moves along an approximately horizontal path of movement and the outfeed end of the pouring tube moves along an approximately vertical path of movement, at least a portion of which vertical path of movement is located within the throughflow vessel.

    Abstract: A method of and apparatus for operating a multiple-roll machine, especially a multiple-roll withdrawing machine or a multiple-roll combination withdrawing and straightening machine in a continuous casting plant, wherein a casting and a dummy bar are passed between pairs of rolls. By means of each pair of rolls there is applied to the casting and the dummy bar as they pass therebetween, the requisite contact pressure for generating the necessary traction or withdrawal force. When the thickness of the casting falls below a prescribed thickness there is applied to the casting only a contact pressure of a magnitude required for traction and when the thickness of the casting exceeds the prescribed thickness the contact pressure is increased to a greater value calculated to again reduce the thickness of the casting to the prescribed thickness.

    Abstract: 1,086,469. Continuous casting machines. CONCAST A.G. Sept. 29, 1965 [Sept. 29, 1964], No. 41429/65. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting machine guiding means is provided, between the mould and the withdrawal rolls which comprises frames 10, Figs. 1 to 4, carrying shafts 15 and 16 on which are mounted guide rollers 17 and 18 respectively, and shafts 19 and 20, mounted perpendicularly to shafts 15 and 16 and which carry rollers 21, 22. The rollers are arranged in pairs, one on each side of the strand to effect supporting and guiding thereof. Coupling straps 23, and 24 are provided between each successive frame 10 and are carried on the shafts 15 so that a swivelling action between the frames can be achieved in order that the guiding action can be effected around a curved path following the curvature of the strand in a curved casting process. Guiding of the frames 10 around a predetermined curved path is effected by rollers 30 on extensions of the shaft 15, the rollers 30 co-operating with a groove in the side supports 35 of the machine. The swivelling movement of the frames is limited by the abutment faces 25 between respective frames. In a vertical casting process the frames may not be hinged together but merely stacked one on top of the other within a frame on the machine and are transversely located by means of the rollers 30 or by dowels interfitting between each frame. Adjustment of the rollers transversely to the axis of the strand to compensate for variation in the thickness of the strand is effected by eccentric bushes in which shafts 16, 19 and 20 are mounted. Known type spray cooling means is attached to the guiding means.

    Abstract: A continuous casting apparatus comprising a casting vessel having a closable pouring opening for pouring metal through a protective tube into a flow-through vessel arranged beneath the pouring opening and into which vessel the outlet end of the protective tube extends, and means for changing the protective tube. The tube is movable along guide means and between a substantially horizontal position removed from the pouring opening and a vertical position beneath the pouring opening. The guide means define paths of movement of the inlet end and the outlet end of the tube between the two positions such that the inlet end moves along a substantially horizontal path and the outlet end moves along a substantially vertical path within the flowthrough vessel. This apparatus enables the protective tube to be introduced into and removed from the casting vessel without the need for raising and lowering the casting vessel.
