Abstract: A single-mode optical waveguide fiber designed to limit power penalty due to four wave mixing and a method of making the waveguide is disclosed. Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link. Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber designated for compensating for positive dispersion in optical telecommunications systems. A key characteristic of the invention is that the novel dispersion compensating waveguide, viz., a waveguide having large negative dispersion, contains no dopants, such as fluorine, which lower the refractive index of silica. A refractive index profile design which includes a high refractive index center segment (5) surrounded by a plurality of alternating high (6, 10, 13) and low refractive index segments, provides a dispersion compensation fiber which has the optical properties required for the system to be compensated without sacrificing bend resistance, increasing splicing loss, or elevating polarization mode dispersion.

Abstract: The optical fiber alternates between regions having different dia meters alo ng its length, wherein the refractive index and the diameters of said fiber result in alternating regions of positive and negative dispersion at a wavelength greater than 1480 nm, yet preferably has a low net dispersion and dispersion slope. A preferred profile consists of a core region surrounded b y a cladding region, said core region comprising a central core region updoped with respect to said cladding region, said central core region surrounded by a moat region downdoped with respect to said cladding region, said moat region surrounded by an annular region updoped with respect to said cladding region . The family of profiles presented when used in conjunction with alternating positive and negative dispersion regions produce low dispersion slope fibers . The family of profiles is useful in conventional WDM applications.
