    Abstract: A method of making 1x2 or 2x2 overclad couplers, switches and the like such that the process is more reproducible and loss characteristics are improved. Such couplers are typically made by inserting the stripped portions of two active optical fibers (19,20) into a tube (10), heating the tube midregion to collapse it onto the fibers and stretching the central portion of the collapsed midregion to achieve the desired coupling characteristics. The improvement involves the insertion of one or two spacer (dummy) fibers (16) into the tube bore along with the active fibers to take up empty space that had been present in tube bore and to prevent an active fiber from sagging and crossing over the other fiber when the tube is heated during the tube collapse step.

    Abstract: A unitary fiber optic coupling device (10) in which N fibers (16) (N3) extend in a parallel array having two coupling regions (11, 12) of reduced crosssectional area. At least one of the fibers (16) is formed of two sections that are situated end-to-end, an active core-containing fiber (47) section that is situated in the first coupling region and a dummy fiber section (52) that is situated in the second coupling region. The coupler also contains at least second and third fibers that are active core-containing fibers (47) throughout their lengths. The second and third fibers couple to one another in the first coupling region but remain uncoupled to one another in the second coupling region. Two fibers that couple in the first coupling region do not couple in the second coupling region, thus avoiding resonance effects.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a fiber amplifier system in which a gain fiber is operatively combined with a fiber optic coupler having first and second coupler optical fibers. The coupler fibers are fused together along a portion of their lengths to form a wavelength dependent coupling region whereby most of the light power of a wavelength lambda s couples between them, and most of the light power of a wavelength lambda p that is introduced into the first fiber remains in it. The mode field diameter of the first coupler fiber is substantially matched to that of the gain fiber and is smaller than that of the second coupler fiber. One end of the first coupler fiber is spliced to the gain fiber. A transmission fiber is spliced to the second coupler fiber, and a laser diode introduces pumping light of wavelength lambda p to the first coupler fiber. The fiber optic coupler preferably includes an elongated body of matrix glass through which the first and second coupler fibers extend. The matrix glass has a refractive index n3 that is lower than that of the fiber claddings. The fibers are fused together along with the midregion of the matrix glass, the fiber cores being more closely spaced at the central portion of the midregion than at the body endfaces, thereby forming the coupling region.
