Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain particles having excellent particle size uniformity, sphericity and porosity and giving a useful carrier for chromatography by saponification, by forming a droplet of a solution of a cellulose organic acid ester in an aqueous medium and coagulating the droplet with a polyhydric alcohol. CONSTITUTION:An organic solvent solution of a cellulose organic acid ester is dripped into an aqueous medium to form liquid droplets and a water-soluble polyhydric alcohol is added to the resultant droplet/aqueous medium dispersion system to coagulate the ester in the liquid droplet. The water-soluble polyhydric alcohol is selected from ethylene glycol, glycerol and 1,3-propanediol. The cellulose organic acid ester is e.g. cellulose triacetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, etc., and the solvent is preferably a mixed solvent containing methanol, propionic acid ester, acetone, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled particles especially suitable as chromatography carrier, having uniform particle size and high sphericity, by bringing a cellulose derivative existing as liquid droplets into contact with an aqueous medium containing an alkali and hydrolyzing. CONSTITUTION:A cellulose derivative (e.g. cellulose triacetate, cellulose diacetate, etc.) which can dissociate its substituent group by hydrolysis reaction and be converted into cellulose is dissolved in an organic solvent (e.g. mixed solvent obtained by adding 5-30vol% methanol, etc., to methylene chloride), dispersed into an aqueous medium while letting the cellulose derivative keep in a dissolved state in such a way that the solution forms liquid droplets and the cellulose derivative in the liquid droplets is hydrolyzed with an alkali in the aqueous medium. The alkali may be precedingly added to the aqueous medium before the liquid droplets of the cellulose derivative solution is formed or may be added after the formation of the liquid droplets.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an acetyl cellulose having low substitution degree and containing relatively large amount of sec-hydroxyl group in the molecule, by treating a cellulose acetate having high substitution degree under a specific hydrolysis condition. CONSTITUTION:A cellulose acetate having high substitution degree is partially hydrolyzed by treating the cellulose acetate in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. NaOH, KOH, etc.) and hydrogen peroxide to effect the preferential formation of sec-hydroxyl group. The amount of the alkali metal hydroxide is preferably >=1 mol-equivalent based on the glucose anhydride unit of the cellulose. The reaction is carried out preferably in a mixture of an organic solvent (e.g. THF, dioxane, etc.) and water.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To polymerize a protein without deteriorating the activity and water- solubility of the protein by treating a protein with a specific water-soluble polysaccharide (derivative) and an aliphatic dialdehyde. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymerized enzyme can be produced by dissolving (A) 0.05-1.5% of a protein, especially an enzyme (e.g., amylase), (B) 0.1-10% of a water-soluble polysaccharide (derivative) containing >=0.02 units of 2- aminoethyl group per one monosaccharide unit and having a molecular weight of 5,000-500,000 (e.g., dextran) and (C) 0.05-1.0% of an aliphatic dialdehyde (e.g., 1,3-dipropanal) in (D) a buffer liquid of pH 6-8 and capable of stably dissolving protein (e.g., phosphoric acid buffer) and reacting the components at 10-40 deg.C for 1-10hr. The obtained polymerized enzyme contains >=0.02 units of 2- aminoethyl group per one monosaccharide unit and contains a water-soluble polysaccharide (derivative) having a molecular weight of 5,000-500,000 and bonded at the 2-aminoethyl group through the aliphatic dialdehyde to the amino group of the enzyme.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a termite repellent having low toxicity with no fear of environmental pollution, having excellent penetration and adsorption in treating wood, etc., capable of sustaining the effects, comprising quaternary ammonium salt of alginic acid as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A termite expellent comprising quaternary ammonium salt of alginic acid, for example, obtained by reacting sodium alginate with a quaternary ammonium salt halide as an active ingredient. The quaternary ammonium salt of alginic acid is dissolved in a lower alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, in 0.1-25wt.% concentration and used. The active ingredient is made into a film on the surface or the surface layer of wood and fixed. Since the film is water-insoluble, it will not flow and since the quaternary ammonium salt has alginic acid as skeleton, it has hydrophilic nature and affinity for wood.
