    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently separating and removing acetaldehyde from a liquid mixture of acetaldehyde, methyl iodide and water or a method for removing easily and sufficiently acetaldehyde contained in a process liquid to be recycled to a carbonylation reactor and recycling efficiently methyl iodide and water to the reactor in the production of acetic acid by carbonylation of methanol.
    SOLUTION: In the method, acetaldehyde is efficiently removed by distilling a liquid mixture containing acetaldehyde of not higher than 5% by weight, methyl acetate of not higher than 10% by weight, acetic acid of 20 to 50% by weight, methyl iodide of 0.1 to 20% by weight and water of 5 to 50% by weight with a distillation column having not less than 40 stages at a reflux ratio of not lower than 10.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compounds by effecting the reaction of methanol, methyl acetate or dimethyl ether and carbon monoxide or a combination thereof with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst in a series of facilities. CONSTITUTION:A rhodium compound and methyl iodide are used as major catalysts to effect the reaction of methyl acetate or dimethyl ether and carbon monoxide or a combination thereof with hydrogen in the first reactor to give acetic anhydride. After most of the catalyst are removed from the reaction mixture, at least a part of the acetic anhydride formed in the first reactor is allowed to react with methanol and/or water in the second reactor to form acetic acid and methyl acetate or acetic acid. The methyl acetate included in the reaction mixture from the second reactor is recycled to the first reactor as a feedstock whereby the production ratio of acetic acid to acetic anhydride can be freely changed. Acetic acid is useful as a starting substance for acetate, acetic anhydride, vinyl acetate and production of terephthalic acid. Acetic anhydride is useful as a starting substance for cellulose acetate, medicines, perfumes, dyes and the like.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reuse acetic acid, by reacting propylene with oxygen and the acetic acid in the vapor phase in the presence of a Pd catalyst, charging the reaction product condensate into a distillation column, cutting unreacted substances and by-product sideways from a recovering part thereof, hydrolyzing the subject by-product and returning the obtained hydrolyzate to the distillation column. CONSTITUTION:Propylene is reacted with oxygen and acetic acid in the vapor phase in the presence of a Pd catalyst to afford allyl acetate. In the process, the resultant allyl acetate, acetic acid and a reaction product condensate, obtained after the reaction and containing the allyl acetate, acetic acid, water, allylidene diacetate formed as a by-product and, as necessary, acrolein is charged into a distillation column 1-1 to cut a mixture of the acetic acid with water, allylidene diacetate and acrolein sideways from a recovering part 2-2 of the above-mentioned distillation column as a side stream and the allylidene diacetate in the side-cut liquid is then hydrolyzed in a hydrolytic reactor 3-3. The resultant hydrolyzate is subsequently returned to the distillation column 1-1 to take out the acetic acid without containing the allylidene diacetate from the column bottom part thereof. The catalyst life is long and this method is industrially advantageous.
