    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an essentially chloride ion-free, colorless, transparent, high- mol.wt. polycarbonate without using toxic phosgene by reacting a dialkyl carbonate with an aromatic dihydroxy compound in the presence of a specified transesterification catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A dialkyl carbonate is reacted with an aromatic dihydroxy compound in the presence of RmSnY4-m (wherein R is an alkyl group, a phenyl group, an alkoxyl group or a phenoxy group; Y is an acyloxy group such as acetyloxy or propionyloxy; and m is an integer of 0.4) as a transesterification catalyst. As the catalyst, (C4H9)3SnOOCCH3 which can give a high-mol.wt. polycarbonate of a colorless and transparent hue is desirable. Representative examples of the above aromatic dihydroxy compounds include compounds of formulas I, II, III and IV (wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each a hydrogen atom, a 1-8 C linear or branched alkyl group or a phenyl group; and X is a halogen atom; and n = 0-4).

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a high molecular weight polycarbonate of transparently colorless without containing chlorine ion nor toxic phosgene by reacting a dialkyl carbonate with an aromatic dihydroxy compound in the presence of a specific ester-interchange catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A dialkyl carbonate (e.g. dimethyl carbonate) is reacted with an aromatic dihydroxy compound (e.g. bisphenol-A) in the presence of a compound expressed by the formula MRn [M is alkali (earth) metal; n is 1 or 2; R is alkyl, phenyl, alkoxy or phenoxy] (preferably NaOCH3) as an ester- interchange catalyst to afford the aimed polycarbonate.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To accomplish the title purification by filtering, grinding and granulating an aromatic polyether polymer mixture followed by extraction with a specific nonsolvent and then treatment in a mixed solution comprising aliphatic alcohol and ketone to remove byproduct salts, gel-like matter and reaction solvent to improve the bulk density of the polymer. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polyether mixture comprising an aromatic polyether polymer, byproduct salts and reaction solvent is filtered through a filter pref. 1-100mum in mesh to remove the byproduct salts and the gel-like matter contained. The resultant mixture is then ground, granulated and then treated with a nonsolvent (e.g., methanol) completely soluble for the reaction solvent but insoluble for the polymer to extract said reaction solvent. The resultant crude polymer is further treated with a mixed solvent of aliphatic alcohol and ketone [pref. at the weight ratio (6:4)-(2:8)] to improve its bulk density, thus obtaining an aromatic polyether polymer pref. =0.3g/cc in bulk density, outstanding in heat resistance and mechanical properties and suitable for e.g., electrical and electronic equipment parts.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently provide the subject polymer having good heat resistance, moisture absorbing property and weather resistance, by grinding an aromatic polymer mixture in a non-solvent and heating the ground polymer mixture under reduced pressure at a temperature between the glass transition temperature, etc., of the polymer and the vapor pressure temperature of a reaction solvent to remove the non-solvent and the solvent. CONSTITUTION:4,4-Dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone, etc., is polycondensated with 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, etc., in the presence of potassium carbonate in a reaction solvent such as tetramethylene sulfone at 225 deg.C to provide an aromatic polymer such as an aromatic polyether sulfone. The resultant aromatic polymer mixture is ground in a non-solvent such as methanol and subsequently heated under reduced pressures within an operative temperature range 3 lower than the glass transition temperature 1 or melting point of the aromatic polymer mixture and higher than the temperature of the vapor pressure 2 of the reaction solvent to distill of the non-solvent and the reaction solvent, thereby purifying the aromatic polymer.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a transparent, colorless high-molecular weight polycarbonate by subjecting a polycarbonate prepolymer obtd. in the former condensation step to the latter condensation step using a specific twin-screw extruder. CONSTITUTION:A polycarbonate having a viscosity-average mol.wt. of 12, 000--60, 000 is produced by subjecting a polycarbonate prepolymer having a viscosity-average mol.wt. of 5,000-20,000 and obtd. in the former condensation step to the latter condensation step using at least one paddle-type self-cleaning twin-screw extruder in the process for producing the polycarbonate by the melt polycondensation of a dihydroxy compd. with a bisaryl carbonate by transesterification. Formulas I and II (wherein R , R , and R are each H, 1-8C alkyl, or phenyl; X is halogen; and n is 0-4) show examples of the dihydroxy compd. Pref. mixing in the extruder is accelerated by revolving the paddles at different speeds.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polycarbonate not substantially containing impurities such as phenolic compounds by subjecting a bifunctional hydroxy compound and a biaryl carbonate to ester exchange to give a carbonate and purifying the carbonate with a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:A polycarbonate obtained by subjecting a bifunctional hydroxy compound and a biaryl carbonate to melt polycondensation by ester exchanging is purified with a compound shown by formula I (R1 and R2 are 1-6C alkyl or cycloalkyl). The purification is carried out by adding the compound of formula I to the polycarbonate, dissolving under heating, where the compounds shown by formula II to formula V (R1 to R5 are H, 1-8C alkyl or phenyl; X is halogen; (n) is 0-4; (m) is 1-4) are together used for the precipitation and granulation as the bifunctional hydroxy compound.
