Abstract: A gelled solid adhesive for coating substrates, typically paper. The adhesive can be made available in stick form and is easily applied in even coats to any surface area of the substrate. The adhesive has sufficient tack enabling the coated substrate to instantly adhere to essentially any free contact surface upon gently pressing the substrate to the free surface. The adhesive coated substrate is easily removable from the contact surface by manually lifting it therefrom. The adhesive permits readherence of the adhesive coated substrate to the same or different free contact surfaces. An adhesive coated paper substrate will readhere many times to free paper contact surface. The preferred gelled adhesive product is formed of an aqueous dispersion of components which include a rubber such as natural rubber latex component, a friction reducing agent, a tackifier, an antioxidant, a gelling agent and surfactant. Preferred classes of tackifiers are anionic aqueous dispersion of hydrogenated esters of rosin and anionic aqueous dispersion of esters of hydrogenated rosin.

Abstract: A binder (B) formed by an elongated member with a first panel (22-1) that diverges at an opening with respect to a second panel (22-2). Both panels (22-1) (22-2) are demarked from the remainder of the binder (B) by an elongated indent line (23-1). The binder (B) includes an interior projection within the elongated member, beyond the first (22-1) and second (22-2) panels. A protuberance (25-1) on the inside of one of the panels (22-1) increases the grip against any inserted material (C).

Abstract: An improved release formulation for use in a heat transferable laminate wherein an ink design image (30) is transferred from a carrier support (10) to an article by application of heat to the carrier support. On transfer the release splits from the carrier and forms a protective coating over the transferred design. The improved release is coated onto the carrier as a solvent based-wax release. The release coating (20) is then dried to evaporate the solvent contained therein. The improved release has the property that its constituents remain in solution down to temperatures approaching ambient temperature. Upon transfer, the release forms a protective coat which may be subjected to hot water. The improved release contains a montan wax, a resin ester or hydrocarbon resin, a solvent, and ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer having a low vinyl acetate content.

Abstract: A heat transferable laminate wherein an ink design image is transferred from a carrier support to a receiving article, typically a plastic bottle or container, by application of heat to the carrier. The heat transferable laminate (10) is composed of a carrier support (50), release coating (60), an ink design layer (70), and improved adhesive coating (80) thereon. The improved adhesive coating is prepared from a mix containing an adhesive component and a film-forming component blended in a miscible solvent. The solvent evaporates upon drying the coating. The adhesive component contains a blend of vinylacetate/ethylene copolymer and a styrene-based resin. The adhesive coating is equally suitable as an adhesive on heat transferable laminates for transfer to a wide variety of plastic articles including polyolefins, polystyrene, and polyvinylchloride.

Abstract: A bound document is made by placing one or more sheets of paper to be bound inside a binder having a hot-melt adhesive and then exposing the binder to microwave energy for a sufficient period of time to cause the hot-melt adhesive to melt bond onto an edge of the sheets of paper. In one embodiment of the invention, the hot-melt adhesive is microwave activatable. In another embodiment of the invention, the hot-melt adhesive is not necessarily microwave activatable and the binder includes a strip of susceptor material which converts incident microwave radiation to heat. In still another embodiment of the invention, the hot-melt adhesive is not necessarily microwave activatable and a quantity of microwave responsive material is incorporated into the hot-melt adhesive. In still yet another embodiment, the hot-melt adhesive is not necessarily microwave activatable, and a microwave susceptor is incorporated into a stand on which the binder may be placed during exposure to the microwave radiation.

Abstract: Apparatus for dispensing fasteners from continuously connected fastener stock (100) includes a needle assembly (130) for dispensing plastic fasteners (101) as part of a tool having a feed track through which a fastener assemblage is fed, such needle assembly (130) incorporating a needle (140) which is encased in a holder which may be easily secured to and removed from such tool. The holder defines in conjunction with the remainder of the tool at least a major portion of the feed track (120). The holder may include an antiback (135) device for permitting the motion of the fastener assemblage within such feed track toward the needle but not in reverse direction. In such dispensing apparatus, the fastener stock is advanced to a transfer site along a feed axis which is parallel to and proximate the axis of the needle through which severed fasteners are dispensed. A knife (83) is mounted on a support slide (81) which is slideable transversely to the feed axis, such support slide (81) being urged toward the feed axis to cause the knife (83) to sever an individual fastener (101) from the fastener stock (100). A transfer slide (85) engages a portion of the side member which becomes a T-bar of the severed fastener, and urges it toward the needle axis. The transfer slide (85) is yieldably coupled to the support slide to permit the transfer slide to lag behind the knife until severing occurs. Such apparatus incorporates a reciprocably driven actuator slide (35), the motion of which induces transverse motion of a cam bar (65). The cam bar in turn drives the transfer slide (85). An antiback device (25, 40) in the form of a catch lever (45) engages the trigger (16) of the tool to prevent its premature release.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for charged particle generation, particularly for use in electrographic imaging, in which charged particles are generated in a discharge region and extracted to form an electrostatic image, wherein a controlled gas is introduced into the discharge region for improved operation and service life. The controlled gas may consist of nitrogen, an elemental noble gas (or mixture of such gasses), or a mixture of nitrogen with one or more noble gasses. In the preferred charged particle generator designs, a high voltage alternating potential (drive voltage) is applied between driver and control electrodes (68, 61) separated by a solid dielectric member (69) to induce glow discharges within apertures (65b) in the control electrodes. Injecting controlled gas into the various discharge sites dramatically reduces the threshold voltages for charged particle generation as well as the corrosion and fouling of electrodes and dielectrics, proving a more durable device and improved electrographic print quality.
