    Abstract: A method of switching from a first to a second transport channel for User Equipment (UE) in a UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) of a UMTS system. The method comprises initiating a channel switch, and initiating a synchronisation of the UE to the second channel. The first channel is maintained during the synchronisation phase such that data may be sent between the UE and UTRAN over the first channel during synchronisation. The first channel is terminated only after synchronisation of the UE to the second channel has been achieved.

    Abstract: A method of handling the transmission of Radio Link Control (RLC) Protocol Data Units (PDUs) from a Radio Access Network (RAN) of a mobile telecommunications system to User Equipment (UE). At a Gateway of the RAN, RLC Service Data Units (SDUs) are segmented into RLC PDUs for transmission to one or more Base Stations (BSs) of a set of BSs belonging to a handover link set. RLC PDUs received from one or more of those BSs are combined into RLC SDUs for transmission to a core network of the system. Each of the BSs buffers the RLC PDUs received from the Gateway and/or the UE. An Automatic Repetition Request (ARQ) mechanism is implemented at each of the BSs to facilitate reliable transmission of RLC PDUs between the UE and the Gateway.

    Abstract: In a UMTS communication system, packets of data are routed from a core network 2 to user equipment 6 (and vice versa) through a radio network controller 4 and associated base station 5. To reduce delay, the ARQ (Automatic Repetition reQuest) mechanism may take place in the base station and UE rather than the RNC and UE. This may lead to problems when UE is in soft handover between two base stations as one of the base stations may receive ACK or NACK signals from the UE for packets which have not yet been transmitted. To mitigate this, there needs to be some sort of synchronisation between the transmission buffers of the two base stations. This is achieved by shifting the transmission window of the base stations so that its lower region covers the packet having the lowest sequence number for which an ARQ has not yet been received. For a UE transmitting to plural base stations and receiving conflicting ARQ messages, the UE may respond to ARQ messages from the BS until a Secure Data Unit has been acknowledged by the BS. In response to ARQ messages from a BS the UE may retransmit packets to all base stations simultaneously until at least one BS has acknowledged a complete Secure Data Unit. A soft handover method is also disclosed.
