Abstract:
A method and apparatus for downhole data transmission. The method comprising monitoring electrical impedance properties of a downhole formation by applying an electrical signal between a first portion and a second portion of a drill string that are electrically insulated from each other by an insulating portion, selecting a frequency for transmitting data by electromagnetic telemetry based at least in part on the monitored electrical impedance and transmitting the data by encoding the data in a waveform having the selected frequency and applying the waveform between the first portion and the second portion of the drill string.
Abstract:
Data is communicated from sensors at a downhole location near a drill bit to surface equipment. Communication to the surface equipment may be direct or may pass through a series of nodes. The nodes in some cases are intelligently reconfigured to achieve desired data rates, achieve power management goals, and/or compensate for failed nodes.
Abstract:
A drill string section includes one or two tool joints that are removable from a body. Tool joints with different thread configurations may be interchangeably used with the same body. The tool joints have a compact construction that can facilitate making the drill string section short. The body overlaps with threads of one or both of the tool joints. The drill string section has non-exclusive application between a mud motor and a drill bit.
Abstract:
An assembly for use in subsurface drilling includes a downhole downhole probe supported by a centralizer. The centralizer comprises a tubular member that extends around the downhole probe. A wall of the centralizer is fluted to provide inward contact points that support the downhole probe and outward contact points that bear against a bore wall of a section of drill string. The downhole probe may be supported for substantially its entire length.
Abstract:
A gap sub comprises a female member comprising a first and second plurality of apertures, and a male member comprising a first and second plurality of cavities. A plurality of non-conductive pins may be inserted through the second plurality of apertures and the second plurality of cavities, thereby locking the relative positions of the female and male members. A plurality of conductive pins may be inserted through the first plurality of apertures and the first plurality of cavities such that there are no electrical connections between the conductive pins and the male member. A dielectric material may be inserted between the male member and the conductive pins.
Abstract:
Adjustment of the angle of a bent sub or other steering feature in a drill string relative to a reference angle of a downhole sensor is facilitated by a rotatable coupling between the bend sub and the sensor. The rotatable coupling may be rotated to align the high side with a reference indicia and locked at the set angle. Calibration of the sensor is facilitated and opportunities for certain measurement errors are eliminated. An embodiment provides a locking mechanism comprising tapered locking fingers which are clamped against a surface by a tapered collar. Rows of ceramic balls retained in circumferential channels may be provided to permit rotation while carrying tensile and compressional forces.
Abstract:
Disclosed are downhole probes in which electrical interconnections between different modules are achieved without wiring harnesses. Modules may be coupled to one another and/or to bulkheads in the probe my couplings that provide substantially rigid couplings. The couplings may be configured to connect together only in one orientation. Electrical connectors may be fixed relative to components of the couplings so that the electrical connectors are automatically aligned for connection by the couplings.

Abstract:
A gap sub assembly for electromagnetic telemetry used in downhole drilling is disclosed. The gap sub comprises a female part comprising a female mating section and a male part comprising a male mating section. The male mating section is matingly received within the female mating section and electrically isolated therefrom. One or more electrically insulating bodies secure the male part axially and torsionally relative to the female part. The electrically insulating bodies also electrically isolate the male part from the female part. The electrically insulating bodies can be installed through apertures in the female part or at least some of the electrically insulating bodies can be installed before the male mating section is inserted into the female mating section. The electrically insulating bodies can be held in place on the male mating section using a retention apparatus such as a ring, a scarf, pods or an adhesive.
Abstract:
A downhole probe of a drilling rig has a probe sleeve for protecting the downhole probe. The probe sleeve may be made of a metal or a polymer such as polyphenylene sulfide. The probe sleeve may be heat-shrinkable to provide a tight fit between the downhole probe and the probe sleeve. The probe sleeve may include one or more protrusions shaped to engage a centralizer surrounding at least part of the downhole probe. The one or more protrusions may be arranged to prevent rotation of the centralizer relative to the probe sleeve. The probe sleeve may be made using a modified extrusion process and may include reinforcement to add strength to weld-lines along the length of the probe sleeve. The protrusions may also be used as reinforcement.
