Abstract: PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain a crucible capable of manufacturing a low-loss glass fiber contg. little impurities for optical transmission by using a natural quartz pipe with a synthetic quartz coat stuck to the inner wall. CONSTITUTION:Quartz guide tube 22 with one end tapered is welded to one end of natural quartz pipe 21. Oxygen gas is introduced from oxygen gas feed pipe 23 into evaporator 25 filled with an Si-contg. glass forming compound such as silicon tetrachloride, and the gas carrying the compound is introduced into pipe 21 through gas introduction pipe 26. On the other hand, by uniformly heating the outer wall of pipe 21 at about 1,800-2,000 deg.C with oxyhydrogen burner 27, the glass forming compound is oxidized to form synthetic quartz coat 28 of high purity on the inner wall of pipe 21. Various kinds of such quartz pipes are formed and united to a body by welding to obtain a multilayered quartz crucible.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable the soot be become multicomponent system galss stock to be formed at specified composition by repeatedly changing over different kinds of raw material vapors thereby causing them to react. CONSTITUTION:As a 3-way cock 4 is operated, POCl3, GeCl4 and carrier gas are introduced into a central nozzle 10 through conduit 2. Mixed soot 91' of P2O5, GeO2 then forms at a specified amount on the inside surface of a crucible 8 through flame hydrolysis. Next, the cock 4 is changed over, then GaCl3 which causes chemical reaction with POCl3 to form composite oxides and is liable to cause inconveniences in the burner part and carrier gas are introduced through conduit 3. Soot 92' of Ga2O3 then forms on the inside surface of the soot 91'. The crucible 8 which have been formed with respectively desired amounts of (P2O5+GeO2) and Ga2O3 alternately through repetition of such operations is heated, whereby the glass stock of 3 elements is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber preform having high numerical aperture, in high yield, without causing cracking, by forming a solid preform after temporarily removing the exhaust-side supporting tube attached to the exhaust-side end of a reaction tube, at the deposition stage of the glass layer. CONSTITUTION:A glass layer constituting the optical path is formed on the inner surface of a reaction tube 1 used as a starting material by the chemical vapor deposition process, and the tube is collapsed to a rod having smaller cross- section by heating and melting to obtain an optical fiber preform. In the above process, the exhaust-side supporting tube 21 attached to the exhaust-side end of the reaction tube 1 is removed temporarily at the deposition stage of the glass layer, and the solid preform is formed. Thereafter, the tube is attached again to the revolving means 3 to continue the collapsing process.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare elliptical core type optical fibers having constant polarized waves easily, by fusing a form adjusting glass member to a base material for the optical fibers having a core and a clad parts having different refractive indexes in the long direction thereof, and drawing the resultant fused fibers under heating while integrating them. CONSTITUTION:Round bar form adjusting members 4 of the same material as a base material 3 are passed along both opposite sides in the long direction on the same diameter of the performed bar-shaped solid base material 3 for optical fibers constituted of a core part 1 and a clad part 2 and fused thereto. Assistant form adjusting glass members 5 of the same material as the form adjusting glass members 4 are passed along interstices 6 on both sides of the base material 3 and the form adjusting glass members 4 and fused thereto the give an assembly 7. The resultant assembly 7 is then fed into a heating furnace from the one end thereof gradually and spun at a given spinning speed while molten integrally under heating to afford the desired elliptical core type optical fibers having constant polarized waves.

Abstract: PURPOSE:In passing an optical fiber through a molten metal in a crucible for covering, to apply a metal film with a uniform thickness to the continuous optical fiber successively, by inserting a rod for adjusting the liquid level of a molten metal to it so that the height of the light level is controlled. CONSTITUTION:A metal material is fed to the crucible 4 for covering until the molten metal 7 has the given height h of the liquid level and it is adjusted. The crucible 4 is heated by the furnace 8 at the desired temperature, and the optical fiber 3 drawn by the spinning means is inserted into a through hole at a constant speed. The liquid level of the molten metal 7 in the crucible 4 is reduced by this covering process, the rod 21 for adjusting the liquid level is inserted into the metal 8 by a distance corresponding to the reduction in the liquid level through the rod sending mechanism 22, so that the liquid level is kept at the given height h. Consequently, the amount of the metal sent to the insertion hole 6 is made constant, and the fiber 3 is covered with the metal having a uniform thickness.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To cover the surface of optical fiber uniformly with a metal, by setting plural nozzles of outlet pipes of crucibles for metal covering at the same plane that is perpendicular to the optical fiber with placing the optical fiber to be coated with the metal at the center. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber 3 to be coated is placed at the center, and the metal melting crucibles 4 and 4' charged with the metal covering material 7 and 7' set in the electric furnaces 8 and 8' respectively, for example, are positioned symmetrically on the supporting base 21 with putting the finely adjusting bases 22 and 22' finely movable in the horizontal direction and the supporting members 23 and 23 between them. The nozzles 6 and 6' of the outlet pipes 5 and 5' from the crucibles 4 and 4' are opposed each other with setting the fiber 3 at the center, and the bases 22 and 22' are adjusted in such a way that the protrusion parts 9 and 9' of molten metal projected from the nozzles 6 and 6' are integrated. The optical fiber 3 is inserted through the integrated protrusion part, to give easily the optical fiber 3' uniformly coated with the metal.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make the intermediate part of an optical fiber bundle flexible by a simple method by forming a linear melt-sticking part between multicore rods while controlling spinning temperature low, and by decomposing and separating the melt- sticking part with fluoric acids, etc., after spinning. CONSTITUTION:Quartz-thread multicore rods 1 are bundled in two stages each of five rods, and then spinned into a sheet in an electric furnace 2 while the turning speeds of rollers 3 are adjusted. In this case, the spinning temperature is controlled low enough to limit melt-sticking between the multicore rods, and the multicore rods are connected linearly. The intermediate part of the thus spinned optical fiber bundle is dipped in a fluoric acid solution to be dissolved. Consequently, the connection part is dissolved easily without spoiling the functions of the optical fiber to provide flexibility.
