Abstract:
A semiconductor laser having a high modulation band-width is made by utilizing an InGaAsP cap layer (14) and an InGaAsP active layer (12) of different crystal structure. Channels (21 and 22) are anisotropically etched through the cap (14), cladding (13) and active layers (12) and partially through the buffer layer (11). The active (12) and cap layers (14) are laterally etched and a semi-insulating material (30) is overlayed the sidewalls. A further etching leaves a thin wall (31 and 32) of the semi-insulating material surrounding the active layer (12). 1.3 νm InGaAsP lasers with 3 dB bandwidths of 24 GHz and intrinsic resonance frequencies in excess of 22 GHz have been successfully fabricated. This is the highest bandwidth ever reported for a semiconductor laser, and the highest resonance frequency for InGaAsP lasers. Excellent modulation efficiencies are observed to high frequencies.
Abstract:
A semiconductor mesa structure (20) is covered with a photoresist material (22) in a localized flooding manner such that the photoresist material (22) is thinner on the top of the mesas (21) and also at the uppermost portion of the sidewalls than at the base of the mesa (21) and the intervening channel. The photoresist (22) is then exposed through a mask (23) in a manner so that when developed, the photoresist (22) from the mesa (21) top and uppermost portion of the sidewall can be removed. When the photoresist (22) is exposed to the actinic radiation, the thinner photoresist (22) is adequately exposed more rapidly than the thicker portion nearer the bottom of the mesa (21), if the mask (23) does not adequately shield the actinic radiation from reaching it. Thus the alignment tolerance is greater than if the photoresist (22) were of uniform thickness.
Abstract:
An adaptive record ranking method for full text information retrieval, which quantifies the relevance of retrieved records to query terms occurring in said record. The method utilizes a multilevel weighting technique which permits user input to affect record weighting at each level of the ranking process. The method utilizes weighted attributes of properties of terms occurring in the records of the data base and compensates for the distance between adjacent words of complex terms. The method has been implemented on large full text data bases and the resulting rankings achieve a relatively high level of precision in ranking the relevance of retrieved records to a user query.
Abstract:
A phosphor having a continuous protective bi-layer coating of alumina surrounding silica surrounding the phosphor particles is disclosed. The method of making a bi-layer coating on phosphor particles is also disclosed. The first layer surrounding the phosphor is silica. The second layer surrounding the phosphor is alumina. The bi-layer phosphor is useful in fluorescent lamps providing improved maintenance and brightness. The bi-layer phosphor can also be used in high color rendition lamps employing blends of phosphors.
Abstract:
In a speech encoder a Fourier transformer (28) of the speech is provided. The Fourier transform is equalized (30) by normalizing the spectrum coefficients to a curve which approximates the shape of the spectrum. Both the curve and the equalized spectrum are encoded (30). Preferably, only a baseband of the normalized spectrum is encoded (30) and that baseband is repeated in the decoder (34).
Abstract:
A personal video involving activities of a subscriber at an amusement park, which includes personal segments (152) recorded by a plurality of video cameras (110) environs segments (154) separately recorded and interleaved between the personal segments (152), and text (151). The organization of certain segments of the personal video is determined by a subscriber who registers identification and information data prior to activating the cameras (110). Upon completion of the recording, the personal segments (152), the text (151) and environs segments (154) are assembled, processed and duplicated for delivery to the subscriber. The environs segments (154) are selected to display weather conditions existing at the time of recording the personal video segments (152).
Abstract:
In a cellular system configuration, the location of a mobile station is determined from the acquisition of cellular network data pertaining to the mobile station, and the translation of such network data into a corresponding geographical position profile. The cellular system includes a mobile station locator (32) entity for receiving from a mobile switching center (33) the network data such as cell and/or sector ID and trunk group member number. The mobile station locator (32) translates the network data into position information such as geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude), resolution (radius), and angle values for sectorized cells.
Abstract:
In a vector transform coding (VTC) scheme for image and video compression, a multi-layered codebook structure and a dynamic bit-allocation scheme in the vector transform domain are employed. The main advantage of this technique is that distortion is controlled by dynamically allocating more bits to vectors causing larger distortions and less bits to vectors causing smaller distortions.
Abstract:
The object of the invention is to provide an optical filtering system which can utilize wide angle optics and still maintain a very narrow pass band. A filtering system (100) is disclosed for receiving and bandpass filtering free space optical signals. The filtering system (100) includes a plurality of optical fibers (110) for accepting an optical signal. The fibers (110) are implanted in an embedding material (120), having an index of refraction which is less than the optical fiber, for collimating the optical signal. The signal is further passed through a narrow, bandpass filter (140) before detection by a photodetector device (150). In an alternative embodiment, the optical fibers (110) are enclosed in a cladding (310), having a surface roughness at the interface of the cladding and the fiber, for enhancing the collimation of the optical signal.
Abstract:
A communication system includes a remote mobile node (11) which acquires time-correlated data of its actual position from a global positional system (GPS) (10), and securely transmits the information as a position history to a central facility. The mobile node (11) includes encrypted programming material such as copyrighted video. At the central facility (12), a comparison is made between the received position history and predetermined signature data representing acceptable time-position histories. If a positive match is detected, a decryption key associated with the matched history is forwarded to the mobile node (11) for decoding of the encrypted programming material.
