    Abstract: An output of a converter unit 3 is applied as an input to an inverter unit 5 through a DC reactor 4, and AC power is supplied to a load from the inverter unit. A ripple component or the like of the DC input of the inverter unit is detected, and the switching elements (51 to 56) of the inverter unit are controlled by PWM control from 10 with the modulation rate determined in accordance with a predetermined instruction, thus providing a sinusoidal output waveform. Since the input to the inverter unit is allowed to contain a ripple, the DC reactor is reduced in size. The output of the inverter unit is a sinusoidal AC power containing no high harmonics and therefore the load is free of effects of high harmonics. The absence of a ripple component in the output of the inverter reduces noise or vibration of the motor 7 and improves the riding quality of an elevator driven by the motor.     Abstract: A plurality of characteristic modes represent traffic demand states occurring in a building in which the system is installed. When a detected traffic demand state coincides with one of the modes, operation of the system is controlled with the aid of control parameters determined thereby so that the currently detected traffic demand is processed in an optimal manner. The modes are stored and selectively read out in response to traffic demand detection. A mode creating and modifying capability accommodates new traffic demand states through a learning procedure, a mode being established by an automatic learning procedure in dependence on the results of evaluation of the traffic demand characteristic with regard to the significance, the time or period and continuity thereof. To this end, a disconnectable learning microcomputer is provided in addition to the system operation and car controlling microcomputers. Special modes can be manually input at a terminal.

The two machine rooms are arranged in different locations within an escalator frame, which are remote from each other in the direction of the length of the frame.
