    Abstract: A computer system with read-only memory and permanent read/write memory provides the user with the capability of loading an alternate operating system at the conclusion of a session without turning the computer off and then on. A customization word with a system request (SR) bit is located in read/write memory and is set by routines located in ROM upon user request. A reinitialization is then forced which resets the SR bit and brings up the machine in the alternate operating system located in external memory on a diskette or fixed disk. A flexible initialization system is also disclosed providing customized initialization in a variety of operating systems and applications. The preferred customized initialization is maintained for future system start-ups due to the resetting of the SR bit.

    Abstract: A network browser is provided with working list maintenance and creation facility which contains an indicator for each URL's listing duration level of permanence for controlling how long a URL will be kept or maintained in the working list and also includes an activity duration permanence level indicator for controlling how long the URL will be kept active.     Abstract: A video display, which may be a television receiver with associated set top device, an intelligent television receiver, or a personal computer system enabled for television display, has associated therewith a remote control which controls modification of the visual images displayed. By use of the remote control, a human observer may cause a processor controlling the video display to execute a control program formulated in a particularly concise language and controlling the display of menus and the like. Menus are displayed as overlays onto a live motion video image.     Abstract: Television viewers are presented with the opportunity to be diverted during intervals such as display of commercials, delays pending initiation of a near video on demand signal stream, and the like. The diversions take the form of freezing a frame of the video being supplied, and then overlaying on the frozen frame various game playing constructs manipulable by the remote control (20) used to perform other control functions for the display device. The display device may be a television receiver linked to a set top device, an intelligent television receiver, or a personal computer provided with television image reception and display capability.
