A pulse generator for generating output pulses at a frequency dependent on the velocity of a document 10 (Fig. 1, not shown), to be read 20, comprises a pulse generator 40 whose pulses are counted 50 and compared 110 with a number in a counter 70 corresponding to the speed of the document 10 to give an output pulse to the reader logic 25 when the numbers coincide. The leading edge of the document 10 is detected by a photo-cell DD1 to initiate operation of a divider circuit 60 which passes pulses to counter 70 after a predetermined count in the counter 50 which is then recycled. The divider circuit 60 operates until the leading edge is detected by a second photocell DD2 whereupon the number in counter 70 is maintained and compared by a gating arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), with the number in counter 50 to give output pulses to the reader logic 25 and simultaneously re-cycle the counter 50 to complete reading each character.
