Abstract:
In character recognition systems, there exists the problem of recognizing adjacent characters which are touching rather than being completely separated by blank spaces. The system described generates a section gate in dependence upon an algorithm geared to character topology. The section gate enables a segmentation system which is adapted to properly segment the characters.
Abstract:
A character recognition scanner is vertically centered on a line of characters by horizontally compressing or consolidating the character parts in the field of view of the scanner and using the horizontally consolidated character parts as a cue to vertically adjust the scanner. The horizontally consolidated character parts are stored in a shift register by a series of bits and the positions of the series of bits in the shift register corresponds to the position of the character parts in the field of view of the scanner. By shifting the data in the shift register in coincidence with the vertical adjustment of the scanner, the data in the shift register serves as a continuous cue of the position of a character within the adjusted field of view. The vertical adjustment of the scanner is then stopped when the series of bits representing a character is at a predetermined position within the shift register.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a character video enhancement system which functions to minimize undesirable black fillins, noise and white voids in character patterns. The characters and noise patterns may be viewed as comprised of pluralities of elemental areas. Enhancement is accomplished by using a series of algorithms which enables a decision to be made at each elemental area as to whether a black mark in an elemental area should be converted to a white mark, or a white mark to a black mark or left black or white. The decision made at each elemental area is made independent of the raw video at that area and depends only on the markings in neighboring areas. For each elemental area, the surrounding neighborhood is investigated to determine:
