Abstract: PURPOSE: To stabilize magnetic characteristics and corrosion resistance by consisting the assembly of a thin film of an MR conductive layer, a thin film of an antiferromagnetic material in contact with this MR conductive layer and a capping layer which comes in contact with the thin film of the antiferromagnetic material and protects the layer of the antiferromagnetic material against the damage occurring from the exposure to a disadvantageous environment. CONSTITUTION: The soft material layer 12 of the magneto-resistive MR reader assembly 10 consisting of the layer 12 of a soft magnetic material on a substrate 14 is parted from the layer 18 of the MR material consisting of a ferromagnetic material, like NiFe. The extremely thin layer 20 of the suitable antiferromagnetic material, such as FeMn in direct contact with the MR layer 18 is given. The capping layer 22 is given in contact with the extremely thin layer 20 of the antiferromagnetic material in order to protect the antiferromagnetic layer against the damage of the corrosion and to make a contribution as a diffusion barrier as the interdiffusion with the layer of the antiferromagnetic material destroys the exchange coupling. This capping layer 22 is made of dielectric materials, such as Cr2 O3 and A2 O3 , or oxidized metal cermet films of Cr-SiO, Ni80 Cr20 -Cr2 O3 .

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a CoPt alloy disk which decreases intrinsic medium noises even at a high recording line density by forming a magnetic layer of a compsn. contg. cobalt, platinum and oxygen and specifying the quantity of oxygen. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording layer in a disk contains oxygen of about 5atm.%, more preferably about 5 to 30atm.%. The disk is formed by introducing oxygen into argon during the adhesion of a CoPt alloy magnetic layer by sputtering. The resulted disk structure produces the considerably decreased intrinsic medium noises even at the high recording line density as compared with the disk structure formed under the similar conditions provided that the oxygen is not introduced into the argon during the adhesion of the CoPt alloy magnetic layer by sputtering. The disk is heat-treated after the adhering stage by sputtering, by which the S/N is further improved. The CoPt alloy disk having the decreased intrinsic medium noise even at the high recording line density is thus obtd.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetoresistance read-out converter having good enhanced exchange and magnetic characteristics and excellent corrosion resistance by forming a magnetoresistance conductive layer, antiferromagnetic thin film layer and capping layer on a substrate. CONSTITUTION: A soft magnetic layer 12 is formed on a substrate 14, and further a nonmagnetic spacer layer 16 and a NiFe magnetoresistance(MR) conductive layer 18 are formed thereon. The layer 12 gives a transverse bias field which is not parallel to the recording medium to the magnetic field of the MR layer 18. A vertical bias field is produced by the exchange coupling between the MR layer 18 and an antiferromagnetic thin film layer 20 of specified thickness formed on the layer 18. Further, a capping layer 22 is formed as a diffusion barrier against corrosion and exchange coupling of the layer 20. Thereby, the obtd. MR read-out converter has stable and good enhanced exchange and magnetic characteristics in heat cycles and excellent corrosion resistance.
