Abstract: PURPOSE: To suppress noises down to the max. permissible level or below and to enable the recording of data at the max. linear density by making a magnetic recording layer have a laminated structure of relatively thin Copt alloy magnetic films or CoNi alloy magnetic films parted by relatively thin non-magnetic spacer films. CONSTITUTION: The laminated magnetic layer on a substrate consist of the alternate films of the magnetic films of a cobalt base contg. platinum or nickel in the alloy and non-magnetic spacer films. The laminated layers have >=2 sheets of the magnetic films and one sheet of the spacer film. The intrinsic medium noises of the laminated disk structure obtd. in such a manner are decreased at the high linear recording density and the advantage of the improved signal to noise ratio is best achieved when the non-magnetic spacer films are formed as thin as possible, i.e., the spacer films are maintained at the thickness sufficient for effectively shutting off the characteristics of the magnetic films to be adhered afterward.

Abstract: An improved thin film metal alloy media for horizontal magnetic recording has a magnetic layer of an alloy comprising cobalt, platinum and chromium, where the chromium concentration in the alloy is greater than 17 at.%. The media exhibits unexpectedly high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and minimal time jitter, thereby resulting in a media which is capable for use at high linear recording density. The media also exhibits excellent corrosion resistance because of the chromium present in the alloy, thereby eliminating the need for a barrier layer between the magnetic layer and the protective overcoat.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a low magnetic field magnetoresistance sensor by the huge magnetoresistance effect by providing a magnetoresistance sensing elements containing a non-continuous layer made of ferromagnetic material buried in a non-magnetic conductive material. CONSTITUTION: A magnetoresistance(MR) sensing elements 41 in granular multilayer magnetic structure include a layer or plane of multiple platelike grains 31. The magnetic moment of the grains 31 is partially oriented along the inductive anisotropic axis as shown by an arrow 47 to be inducted in the MR sensing elements 41. The bias magnetic field by a bias layer 45 arrays the moment of the grains 31 in a desired direction so as to adjust the operating points of an MR sensor 40 to be a linear part of responsive characteristics. In such a constitution, the MR sensor 40 is suspended on a data truck 44 thereby enabling the magnetic field H in data transition 46 to be applied on the plane of the MR sensing elements 41.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a thin-film magnetic disk having high saturation coercive force and low noise intrinsic to a medium by incorporating the oxide of elements having relatively low solubility and relatively high affinity to oxygen into the cobalt allay of a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic layer in the disk contains the oxide of >=1 kinds of the impurity elements in addition to a cobalt alloy material. These elements exhibit the high affinity to oxygen and since the elements have the atom radii extremely different from the atom radii of cobalt, the element exhibit the relatively low solubility in the cobalt. Such elements include yttrium zirconia, etc. The solubility of the impurity elements in the cobalt is low and since the grain boundary region of the magnetic layer is in a place of high energy, the coupling between the grain boundaries is conceivably ruptured by the oxidation of the impurity elements gathering at the grain boundaries. The increase in the saturation coercive force and the decrease of the noise can be resulted from the decrease in the coupling of the internal grains. As a result, both of the high coercive force and the low noise are obtd.
