Abstract: A programmable automatic call and data transfer processing system which automatically processes incoming telephone calls, facsimiles and e-mails based on the identity of the caller or author, the subject matter of the message or request, and/or the time of day, which includes: a central server for automatically answering an incoming call and collecting voice data of a caller; a speaker recognition module connected to the server for identifying the caller or author; a switching module responsive to the speaker recognition module for processing the call or message in accordance with a pre-programmed procedure based on the identification of the caller or author; and a programming interface for programming the server, speaker recognizer module and the switching module. The system is programmed by the user to so as to process incoming telephone calls or e-mail and facsimile messages based on the identity of the caller or author, subject matter and content of the message and the time of day. Such processing includes, but is not limited to, switching the call to another system, forwarding the call to another telephone terminal, placing the call on hold, or disconnecting the call. In another aspect of the present invention, the system may be employed to process information retrieved from other telecommunication devices such as voice mail, facsimile/modem or e-mail. The system is capable of tagging the identity of a caller or participants to a teleconference, and transcribing the teleconferences, phone conversations and messages of such callers and participants. The system can automatically index or prioritize the received calls, messages, e-mails and facsimiles according to the caller identification or subject matter of the conversation or message, and allow the user to retrieve messages that either originated from a specific source or caller or retrieve calls which deal with similar or specific subject matter.

Abstract: A method for collecting data associated with the voice of a voice system use r includes conducting a conversation with the user, capturing and digitizing a speech waveform of the user, extracting at least one acoustic feature from the digitized speech waveform and storing attribute data corresponding to the acoustic feature, together with an identifying indicia, in the data warehouse in a form to facilitate subsequent data mining. User attributes can include gender, age, accent, native language, dialect, socioeconomic classification, educational level and emotional state. Data gathering can be repeated for a large number of users, until sufficient data is present. The attribute data to be stored can include raw acoustic features, or processed features, such as the user's emotional state, age, gender, socioeconomic group, and the like. In an alternative form of method, the user attribute can be used to real-time modify behavior of the voice system, with or without storage of data for subsequent data mining. An apparatus for collecting data associated with a voice of a user includes a dialog management unit, an audio capture module, an acoustic front end, a processing module and a data warehouse. The acoustic front end receives and digitizes a speech waveform from the user and extracts at least one acoustic feature from the digitized speech waveform. The feature is correlated with at least one user attribute. The processing module analyzes the acoustic feature to determine the user attribute, which can then be stor ed in the data warehouse. The dialog management unit can include, for example, a telephone interactive voice response system. The processor can be an application specific circuit, a separate general purpose computer with appropriate software, or a processor portion of the IVR. The processing module can include an emotional state classifier, a speaker clusterer and classifier, a speech recognizer, and/or an accent identifier. Alternatively, the apparatus can be configured as a real-time- modifiable voice system for interaction with a user, which can be used to practice the method for tailoring a voice system response.

Abstract: An interface device for connecting to and retrieving data from a remote computer system, and method of compressing, decompressing and transferring data therefor. A user may set transfer constraints on the interface device. The interface device may be a web browser. The user selecting a web site requests data, normally image data from a remote computer system. The interface device includes a cache memory where generic objects may be stored. Each generic object corresponds to an original object in the requested data. Depending on the data transfer constraints, instead of retrieving the entire image, e.g., web page image, unaltered from the host system, a compact generic image is retrieved, initially, wherein generic objects are substituted for each corresponding original object. A pseudo-image is displayed, with the generic objects substituted for corresponding original objects. Subsequently received original objects may be substituted for generic objects as each original object is received.

Abstract: A web page adaptation system and method provides organization of viewing material associated with web sites for visual displays and windows on which these home pages are being viewed. A different viewing-access strategy is provided for such visual devices varying, for example, from standard PC monitors, laptop screens and palmtops to web phone and digital camera displays and from large windows to small windows. A new web site design incorporates features that permit automatic display of the content of home pages in the most friendly manner for a user viewing this content from a screen or window of a certain size. For example, if a size of a display screen or window allows, links are displayed with some text or pictures to which they are linked. Conversely, if a size of a screen or window does not allow display of all textual and icon information on a whole screen or window, the home page is mapped into hierarchically linked new smaller pages that fully fit the current display or window. The unique display strategy of the invention is provided by a web page adaptation scheme that is implemented on a web site server or is incorporated in a web browser (e.g., as a java appelet) or both. This adaptation strategy employs variables that provide size of screen and/or window information from which a call to a web site was initiated.

Abstract: The device has a driver that can receive incompatible input data connected to a memory with a CPU driving a bit reader. A universal driver server is connected to the memory via a network. CPU processes read the bit content and pass it to the universal server, which identifies the associated operating system, activates a corresponding server operating system and performs operations on a diskette formatted for a different operating system. The device has a driver that can receive input data incompatible with its operating system. The driver is connected to a memory with a CPU driving a bit reader in the memory. A universal driver server (105) is connected to the memory via a network (103). CPU processes read the bit content and pass it via the network to the universal driver server, in which a process identifies the operating system in which the input data are formatted, activates a corresponding server operating system and performs operations on a diskette formatted for a different operating system. Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of operating a computer system and a machine-readable memory device.

Abstract: This invention involves using an alternative driver that is located in a specified server on the Internet. For example, a person could take a floppy disk that is not compatible with their computer and transform it over the Internet through an alternate compatible driver. In order to do this, a special universal bit reader is located within the server. A second variant is that a bit reader would be located in a user's computer and it would be connected to a global server. So, all the files could be accessed through the Internet. This would allow to read and write data from/to a disk that was formatted on a different operational system. In order to solve a problem how to run applications that are not compatible to the operational system on a computer where this disk was inserted, the invention teaches the following approach. A universal driver on the server uses a program that looks for similar applications in a database server that contains a database of applications from different operational systems. The universal driver can identify what programs in the application are needed either reading names of programs on the disk or it can read a special table in which applications point to programs in different operational systems.
