    Abstract: A photo-cathode electron source suitable for use in flat panel displays has an extractor grid means (104) maintained, in use, at a positive potential with respect to the photo-cathode surface. The extractor grid may be used as a carrier for unfired photoemissive material which forms the emission surface of the photo-cathode. The material is deposited on the surface (103) of the photo-cathode means (102) by means of evaporation from the extractor grid (104).

    Abstract: An electron source comprises a cathode means, and an extractor grid used to extract electrons from the cathode. The extractor grid is formed by etching a plurality of apertures in the material. A plurality of spacing members for spacing the extractor grid at a constant, predetermined spacing from the cathode are used. Each of the spacing members is formed by etching around a substantial portion of the periphery of the aperture and folding a remaining portion of the periphery of the aperture at substantially a right angle to the planar material.

    Abstract: Display apparatus consisting of at least one eye tracker, a processor and a display screen is capable of correcting sight defects, such as nystagmus, where the brain fails to compensate for the normal small movements of the eyes which protect the retina from saturation and exhaustion. Eye trackers ( 102 , 104 ) follow the position of the eyes ( 110 , 112 ) as normal small involuntary movements are made. This motion is processed in order to calculate the effective displacement of the image caused by the motion. The image ( 108 ) displayed on the screen ( 106 ) is moved to compensate for the effective displacement caused by the eye motion. Further processing to take into account the distance from the eye to the screen may be used, as well as providing a dark border around the display which becomes lighter closer to the image (see fig. 5 ).

    Abstract: A bistable liquid crystal display cell 100 comprises at least two compartments 114, 116 separated by thin transparent membranes 112. Each compartment has a grating located on one of its surfaces. A first compartment 114 contains a first liquid crystal mixture, and a second compartment 116 contains a second liquid crystal mixture. The mixtures have a first alignment, as in fig.5, in which the molecules in each compartment are aligned parallel to the plane of the display cell but orthogonal to each other, and a second alignment, as in fig. 6, in which the molecules are aligned normal to the plane of the display cell.
